Southern Utah PostMormon Gathering Sunday, 2 PM January 8th 2017

Posted by skeptic on December 18, 2016

Note: With New Year’s falling on the first Sunday we will meet the second Sunday.

Those attending will enjoy a presentation by artist Leslie Peterson.

About our Speaker:

Leslie O. Peterson came to art, not by design but by serendipity. In 2011, she enrolled in a community art class with a son-in law who had recently suffered a stroke. Through she meant the course as a form of therapy for him, she was captured in an instant and has been a painter of prolific output ever since. Peterson is best known for her charming, whimsical series of portraits titled “The Forgotten Wives of Joseph Smith.” These 34 portraits have garnered a great deal of attention locally and nationally. In 2015, Provo’s Writ & Vision bookstore featured the collection for several weeks, the University of Utah and Dixie College both staged exhibits, and a video about the series won two awards in the annual Radio West Film Competition. Most notably, The New Work Times published an article about Peterson and all the wives in its August 17, 2015 edition. Peterson decided to paint Smith’s wives after reading an essay about them on She says that working on the portraits was her way of celebrating their reappearance in Mormon awareness and bringing them to life in Church history after a long absence.

Included as we start out the New Year selected members will share their paths to enlightenment.

Come and enjoy visiting with likeminded people.

Marilyn Bushman is a poet and author. She has won awards from the Association of Mormon Letters, the Comstock Review, and the Utah Arts Council. She has five published books, including 3 poetry books, a children’s poetry book and a biography: “Worthy.” One of her poetry books, “Cheat Grass,” about her southern Utah grandparents, was chosen for the Pearle M. Olsen Award in 1999, making her that year's Utah State Poetry Society Poet of the Year.

Marilyn self-describes as a liberal Mormon feminist, having been active in feminism (and liberal both in politics and the Church) since the early 1970's.  She is married to Blaine Carlton, her high school sweetheart, and the two of them adore their five children and 16 grandchildren.

Marilyn and Connie will discuss the creation of their book, “Worthy” a biography covering Connie Saddler’s life journey, starting with a childhood of poverty and abuse. Coming up May 1’st 2016 - Kristyn Decker to lecture!

Posted by skeptic on April 04, 2016

Kristyn Decker was a 7th generational polygamist. She is the 12th of 23 biological children of “prophet” Owen Allred. Her mother was the first of his 13 “wives.” As a child, Kristyn never felt safe inside or outside of her polygamous culture—always feeling terrified and neglected. Yet the commandments were to “endure to the end, because your blessings will be greater in Heaven . . .”

While raising her seven children to believe in polygamy, Kristyn taught school off and on for 18 years in the AUB private school her children attended while also struggling with years of un-answered questions and suicidal depression. After being offered some much-needed therapy, she began to discover her authentic self.

In 2003 she ended her 33-year marriage and left polygamy. Decker then became the president of the Hope Organization, dedicated to assisting survivors of polygamous relationships. After publishing her first book, Fifty Years in Polygamy – Big Secrets and Little White Lies, Decker founded the Sound Choices Coalition. She spends numerous hours volunteering in many aspects of the SCC, speaking to inform society about the realities of polygamy and to advocate for its victims. Kristyn also completed and published a new, uncensored version of her book.

As a result of her work, Kristyn has had a wonderful opportunity to speak in many locations across our country. She has appeared on, among others, The Today Show; CNN Weekend News; Good Morning AZ; NPR Community Voices; The Fawn Rigan Show - WCCO – Minneapolis; KTAR Talk Radio; Jay Lawrence, KSL A.M. News; as well as frequent presentations at various conferences, book clubs, Rotary clubs, churches, and libraries.

Southern Utah PostMormon Lecture Series- March 6th, 2016 Author Dave Nelson

Posted by skeptic on February 27, 2016

Mormons in Nazi Germany

By David Conley Nelson

While Adolf Hitler’s National Socialist government was persecuting Jews

and Jehovah’s Witnesses and driving forty-two small German religious

sects underground, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

continued to practice unhindered. How some fourteen thousand Mormons

not only survived but thrived in Nazi Germany is a story little known,

rarely told, and occasionally rewritten within the confines of the Church’s

history—for good reason, as we see in David Conley Nelson’s Moroni

and the Swastika. A page-turning historical narrative, this book is the first

full account of how Mormons avoided Nazi persecution through skilled

collaboration with Hitler’s regime, and then eschewed postwar shame by

constructing an alternative history of wartime suffering and resistance.

The Twelfth Article of Faith and parts of the 134th Section of the

Doctrine and Covenants function as Mormonism’s equivalent of the

biblical admonition to “render unto Caesar,” a charge to cooperate with

civil government, no matter how onerous doing so may be. Resurrecting

this often-violated doctrinal edict, ecclesiastical leaders at the time

developed a strategy that protected Mormons within Nazi Germany.

Furthermore, as Nelson shows, many Mormon officials strove to fit into

the Third Reich by exploiting commonalities with the Nazi state. German

Mormons emphasized a mutual interest in genealogy and a passion for sports. They sent husbands into the Wehrmacht and

sons into the Hitler Youth, and they prayed for a German victory when the war began. They also purged Jewish references from

hymnals, lesson plans, and liturgical practices. One American mission president even wrote an article for the official Nazi Party

newspaper, extolling parallels between Utah Mormon and German Nazi society. Nelson documents this collaboration, as well

as subsequent efforts to suppress it by fashioning a new collective memory of ordinary German Mormons’ courage and travails

during the war.

Recovering this inconvenient past, Moroni and the Swastika restores a complex and difficult chapter to the history of Nazi

Germany and the Mormon Church in the twentieth century—and offers new insight into the construction of historical truth.

Southern Utah PostMormon Lecture Series February 7th, 2016- Joe Rawlins

Posted by skeptic on January 30, 2016

The Southern Utah PostMormon Association has  another great lecture lined up first Sunday in February at 2 pm at the Red Lion Hotel, 850 South Bluff Street.  We will be welcoming a guest speaker from northern Utah (Lehi):

Joe Rawlins is the ex-Mormon author of The Korihor Argument: A Missionary’s Journey Out of Mormonism. Rawlins grew up in Mesa, AZ as a devout Mormon and confronted his faith in Mormonism and in God while serving as a missionary in Perú.

Now an atheist and humanist, Rawlins writes and lectures on finding self-driven purpose, leaving religion and creating enduring inter-faith families. He has committed to donate a portion of the sale of each copy of The Korihor Argument to help children of Peru, where he served as a Mormon missionary in 1999-2001.

Joe has so many topics that sound interesting it was hard to decide what he should prepare for our group, so we left it up to him.

Joe is famous for secretly recording his own excommunication proceedings:

Posted by skeptic on January 05, 2016

Scholars Matthew Harris and Newell Bringhurst will talk about their new book: The Mormon Church and Blacks- A Documentary History

Newell Bringhurst will discuss early blacks who were ordained to the Priesthood during Joseph Smith's era, polygamy and the ban, lineage and the ban, etc.  Matt Harris will discuss: Mormons and Civil Rights, BYU Athletic Protests, IRS pressure on the Mormon church to lift the ban, lingering racism after the ban, the background and context to the church's latest expression on "Race and Priesthood" Gospel Topics Essay.  Above all, we will cover the evolving rationales for the ban: (1) blacks cursed, (2) blacks fence-sitters, (3) "we don't know," (4) folklore, (5) ban rooted in racism from B. Young's day.

If there is time Matt will tell us about his latest research on Ezra Taft Benson!

Newell and Matt will be speaking at Dixie State University the following Monday after our meeting.

This should be a wonderful presentation for those of us who enjoy the flavor of the hidden Mormon history.

Southern Utah Post Mormon Association to meet December 6th at the Red Lion in St. George

Posted by skeptic on November 28, 2015
Many of us here have found  academic rigor and critical thinking equals enlightenment. How much do we extend this thought process to what is presented us in everyday life?
In our search for a conclusion do we have an idea of what good evidence looks like and are we willing to continually question our "own" assumptions?
Our December 6th lecture is one which guarantee's to broaden the thought process. Our guest speaker Gregory Bramlet will speak on "Metaphysics and Epistemology as Tools of Thinking".
Greg's knowledge, wit and humor should prove to be enlightening and entertaining.
Lecture series will begin  @ 2 PM
Place: Red Lion 850 S. Bluff St. St. George Utah
Refreshments will be served.

Southern Utah PostMormon Lecture series October 4th, 2015

Posted by skeptic on September 15, 2015
The Southern Utah PostMormon Association to meet October 4th
Place: St. George, Utah at the Red Lion affiliation 850 So. Bluff St. St. George Utah
Time: 2 PM- Red Lion Restaurant
Come and examine the LDS Churches admission of the Rock in the Hat story.
The need for this process was recently explained by LDS Apologist Daniel Peterson in the following Deseret News article.

Some critics of Joseph Smith mock the fact that part of the Book of Mormon translation process apparently involved dictating while looking at a stone that he’d placed within a hat.

Yet far from being damaging evidence against his claims and against the Book of Mormon, this fact may strongly support their plausibility. The Lord has said that he makes (seemingly) weak things become strong (Ether 12:27), and this seems yet another such case.

Consider a smartphone or e-reader, for instance. Their screens are very difficult to read out in the sunlight and need to be shaded. Or consider your personal computer. You probably don’t place it directly in front of a window where bright light will be streaming into your face. You need contrasting darkness so that you can see the screen without strain, and especially so if you’ll be working on it for lengthy periods. Otherwise, your eyes will tire and your head will ache.

Posted by skeptic on April 25, 2015
ExMormon Conference presenter and past Southern Utah PostMormon Chapter leader Arza Evans will share his journey as the author of the book THE KEYSTONE OF MORMONISM. Arza will reveal why he had to have his book printed outside of Utah, how writing the book changed his life, the personal cost with his excommunication both positive and negative reaction to the books printing.
Those of us who know Arza personally have come to admire his integrity and great sense of humor. He indicates he has a few books left and will sell them at his cost $10.
Preceding Arza's lecture, PostMormon.orgs Tapir Whisperer will bring us up to date on LDS Church membership. What do the numbers tell us, are the new missionary efforts really helping?
