On June 4, the Clinton Theater will be showing "8: The Mormon Proposition" as part of a local film festival. This is the movie that was a smash hit at the Sundance Film Festival a few months ago -- so much so that they had to schedule several additional viewings. Richard Cowan, the producer, will be here in Portland for this showing and I would assume he will taking questions afterwards. Basically the movie is about the church's involvement -- both with hands-on organization of canvassing and financial contributions by the CA membership. The church actually donated a considerable amount of money also -- a fact which they denied until it became apparent someone had the proof, and this proposition to deny marriage between gays would not have passed if the church had not gotten involved just a few weeks before the election.
I have not seen the movie, but everything I have read indicates that Cowan pulled together enough first-hand accounts and church- printed materials to prove the depth of the church's involvement. This is a great opportunity, and it will be shown only this one night: June 4. at 7 PM. We will go out afterwards for food and drinks -- I have a place in mind, just need to confirm. If you are going to come, send me a return email, so I can get a feel for the numbers as I reserve some space for us afterwards.
The ticket info is here:
https://www.ticketturtle.com/index.php?ticketing=qdoc - I know that you can buy tickets at the door, but I will check with the festival a few days before to make sure it's not getting close to being sold out. If it looks that way, I'll let everyone know so you can order online - and they can be printed off at home.
