Regarding the tolerance vote, I do perceive many moderates taking the "well, mormons are no more crazy than other religious nuts running for office" way, and they are right. Evangelicals are batshit crazy as a lot, AND are on a mission to kill secularism. But, I'm worried the LDS Church's dirty laundry will be conveniently ignored as a result. Romney threads on Reddit are full of responses defending Mormons as a people as generally nice and honest people despite their wacky beliefs. Once Romney gets passed the primaries, which he's sure to win since he's the sanest one of the lot and the only one who can take on Obama (which in itself says something about the GOP, but I digress), he will return to the economy, jobs, Obama-as-anti-capitalist rhetoric that will resonate with the general masses. And the "Mormons are OK with me" could shroud exmos/NOM concerns about the LDS church at best, or highlight use as fringe and disgruntled ex-mormons at worst.

Although perception can frequently be considered reality at times.  Couldn't possible perceptions be more rapidly changing, too?  And the Obama camp has yet to touch on the many deliciously waiting topics, right?

Well, anything can happen. But I'm frankly not convinced the Obama administration and supporters, or even the PACs, could make a huge dent in moderates' perception of Romney's mormonism. They're just not going to care. In fact, I think Romney will have the persecution/tolerance narrative on his side.  I think the dominant discussion among moderates will be that they don't care about his religion, as long as he has good enough business sense to improve the economy. We're not talking about Scientology and Hollywood.  There are enough prominent and wealthy LDS members in respectable (read corporate) positions to make the Mormon image work for Romney. He's just vanilla enough to the OK enough GOP/anti-Obama candidate.

Howard Hughes would surround himself with Mormons in anything but business dealings.  Utah, having a verifiable and consistent record of a poor choice for any money making scheme.  I wonder if any ethics can easily come into question if doing a background check on someone's religious beliefs finds any gross or severe deficits indicating neglectful audits of easy fact checking?

Memory disorders become the norm during presidential elections. If he's the GOP candidate, the Right will eventually fall in line like they always do.  Moderates will look past his Mormonism, particularly if already Obama-disgruntled.  In any case, the vast majority of Americans are religious to some degree.  People trust Mormons more than atheists.  People outside of Utah have no clue about the MLM culture and business ethos there.  To them, Romney might be the great Olympics savior-guy.  I'm in no way defending Romney on anything. I certainly won't be voting for him. But I wouldn't vote for any republican, period.  I'm just saying that outside the exmo and evangelical worlds, Romney's religion will take a back seat in the election.  That's my story, and I'm sticking to it. I wish that won't be the case.  I would love to see not just Romney, but the church and all LDS upper crust held to the fire.  But I'm not banking on it.

I think we are seeing the fat rats scurrying about on their not-so-good Salt Lake ship, Smith and Young left everybody Mormon stranded on.  Now it seems the rest of the story needs to play itself out.  And all in good time my friend, all in good time.

If Romney is saying "Believe in America"... how come it isn't counseling to Pray about it First?

I know what you mean when you say that statement.  Taking a careful look at what Mormons believe, it scares me to try and think of what is inside of Mitt's mind when he personally uses a line like that one.

The LDS Believed for a very long time that the US government system should and could be completely overthrown, so is that what is deeply imbedded inside of his brain?

And just wait till the Whitehorse Whitehouse has some of it's rooms redecorated and renamed possibly the Celestial or Kolob wing.  Okay, now I'm just having some fun.

At first, not wishing to release taxable income information Mitt Romney decides he had better do it.  Releasing a partial amount of his paid taxes with apparently too little and too late of an enthusiastic try.

I didn't know 25% of caucus voters in Nevada are thought to be Mormon.

"Romney, the former Massachusetts governor, held a double-digit lead over his nearest rival as the totals mounted in a state where fellow Mormons accounted for roughly a quarter of all caucus-goers."

I would love to see Romney continue try to play the religious freedom card.  The theocracy that the GOP rightwing base wants doesn't include mormon theocracy. The right just wants freedom to hate in the name of religion. Mormons want that, too. But they are in the precarious position of also wanting freedom to be mormon, while the rest of the GOP wants to maintain their freedom to hate mormons.

Meanwhile, Santorum is gaining in AZ...  Romney's "have no actual position on anything" rebranded as moderate politics continue to dog him.  I'm enjoying watching the GOP implode, though.

God, Romney looks more ridiculous each passing day. He can't show his religion or everyone but Utah valley will eat him alive. He looks phony as a conservative, and he looks like a robot as a moderate.  I find it a sad commentary on the modern Republican party that the only possibly electable candidate they can come up with is a shell of a human.

I know this thread is about what's going on inside the man. I seriously don't think anything is going on aside from a desire for status, praise, and authority.  It's not greed - he's already rich enough.  No, it's simply the mantle of being the most visible leader in the world.  I don't see any extension of LDS beliefs, per se.  On the contrary, I think the motivation for power was already there, and has been merely reinforced by LDS culture. He looks like every ####### stake president I've ever known - rich, "successful", handsome, charming, perfect kids, and perfect hair.  I think Mormons like him not because of beliefs, but because he validates their existence and their need for authority and charismatic leaders.  In fact, his politics are more moderate than most LDS people I know.  But they love him because he looks the part.  Man, they are in for a rude awakening.

At least President Obama had the quick sense to finally distance himself from Reverend Wright when it was learned how racist that one man was.

Mormonism has an entire long history of hating and depriving black men like Barack Obama.

And he is thinking he had better try and dilute that hot button topic with a few other stale slices for a hopefully edible swiss-cheese sandwich. Will the people bite?

Planned Parenthood is planning more anti-Romney ads.

And just in the possible slight chance you may be wondering if Mitt has a certificate of live birth in America.

Romney's birth certificate released by his campaign:

For some reason PBS in America will still not reference another recent documentary on Mitt Romney called The Mormon Candidate.  If the commentator (Michael Kranish) in the above piece addresses Mitt as 'MR. Fix-it' maybe we can expect to begin to look at Romney's hugely flawed paradigm mapping skills in the past and the present and most likely of the future too?

"...Did LDS bureaucratic culture shape Romney’s tenure at Bain Capital as a by-the-book decision maker who falls in line with corporate and institutional agendas? Does he consider minority perspectives? How does he relate to people who disagree with him? Who loses when Romney wins?"

Not an article of great insight and import, but posted for completeness:

Mitt Romney, a privately devout Mormon, worships with family on vacation

"WOLFEBORO, N.H. — Every year, Mitt Romney and his family spend a week at his estate on the picturesque Lake Winnipesaukee. They go boating, play games — and attend church, an expression of the faith that’s fundamentally shaped the Republican presidential candidate.

Romney, the first Mormon to clinch the presidential nomination of a major party, attended services Sunday with his wife, Ann, five sons, five daughters-in-law and eighteen grandchildren. They made up nearly a third of the congregation that gathered in the small, nondescript building that houses this tiny resort town’s branch of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

The Romney clan has attended the church in Wolfeboro many times before — only now the family patriarch carries the distinction of being President Barack Obama’s Republican challenger.

Not that church leaders or worshipers mentioned the new reality as, one by one, they stood at a podium to offer testimony, a custom in Mormon churches on the first Sunday of every month. Among those testifying: one of the many Romney grandchildren.

 ...

The family’s devotion to the Mormon faith is a part of Romney’s life that the electorate rarely sees. Romney himself almost never mentions it in public. And his campaign typically bars the media from seeing him participate in a religion with which many Americans are unfamiliar. But it’s a part of his life that could help him connect with an American public that’s only just now starting to get to know him — one that includes many church-goers.

SEEING HIM GO TO A MORMON CHURCH IS ONE THING,   TALKING TO HIM ABOUT EXACTLY WHAT HE BELIEVES OF MORMONISM IS ANOTHER !  A VERY BIG "ANOTHER".!      IF HE GETS STUCK IN AN INTERVIEW EXPLAINING CHURCH BELIEFS, HE WILL BE IN BIG, BIG TROUBLE!

Tonight Romney live at the convention:

http://news.yahoo.com/elections/republican-national-convention-2012/

Go ahead and open another tab so you can maybe chat about the giant "I'm a Mormon" info-commercial tempo during the opening thus (sorry) far.

Clint was fair, funny too.

On the day ahead of the last presidential debate did "Sandy", as an act of God, send the outer bands of forceful winds contributing to the crash of Mitt's overinflated airship?
