Those of you who live anywhere in Utah and Idaho are by now PAINFULLY aware that BYU-I got a new president yesterday. (And I only say "painful" because we're getting pretty sick of seeing this guy splashed on the papers, he being such a Mormon celebrity and all as the former Dean of the Harvard Business School.)
Anyway, I thought I'd catch the rest of you up on some of the tid-bits related to this inauguration that you might not otherwise hear about were it not for Peter_Mary the Gossip-Monger.
So, first tid-bit that I thought was odd about this: The inauguration of the President was held on campus yesterday, with seating for roughly 1,600. No problem. Except...the ENTIRE first Presidency of the Church decided to attend, as well as a handful of other GAs (Oaks, Eyering, Bednar that I recall). So when that announcement was made, and tickets went on sale, they sold out in less than two hours.
Now don't miss what I just said. Go back and read it slow. Okay, I'll help you out. "When tickets went on sale, they sold out..." I'm sorry, but does it seem a little weird that people bought tickets to see the first Presidency? Does the Church have to make a profit to see the Prophet? I'm pretty sure the Manwaring Center is paid for, and I doubt they have to rent the place... Because apparently, that's what this carnival show was about. They usually don't make such a big deal at the installation of a new President. But bring in the big guys, and suddenly WE HAVE TO GO! Now, I know there are some who will disagree with the statement I am about to assert, but back me on this one Luna: Two words--Personality Cult.
Kim Clark is a bright guy. He's probably recognizing the marketing power that the first presidency has among Mormons, and he's thinking, "I can finance a new President's Home with just a couple of gigs with Gordon and the boys."
So the next day, we get all the great news in the paper about who said what, and the following was just my favorite, because it reinforces just how friggin' arrogant they are. Kim Clark (er, excuse me, PRESIDENT Kim Clark) was addressing all his adoring fans after GBH "installed him" (like a plug-in?). He said he had three initiatives that he wanted undertaken immediately. Improve the quality of educational experience at BYU-ID; improve the caliber of students; and make it more affordable. "Now many will think that these three goals seem impossible. In fact, there appear to be dichotomies. But even though many will not see how this can be done, remember that we are not limited by the wisdom of men."
Oh my hell.
Now let's think about this for a minute. The Church went and recruited one of the brightest business minds out there, the Dean of the Harvard Business School, but not because they valued his MIND, only his PRIESTHOOD, which is, by the way, the same Priesthood Peter_Mary is in possession of. (I retain the office of High Priest, thank you very much... :duh ).
Yeah, we're supposed to believe that. Of course, when he does some great and innovative things (and I have NO doubt he will...he has the brains, the experience, the connections, and is connected to DEEEEEEEEEEEP Pockets), he can, in all "humility" chock it all up to our Father in Heaven, as he humbly accepts his calling to be a member of the 12 Apostles... Note this in your little Palm Pilots...this man will be an Apostle within the next 6 years. He's on the fast track.
The Bull-pucky is running thick in Rexburg, these days. With a new temple on the way, the expanding role of BYU-I, and a high-profile politically astute president at the helm, Rexburg is on the brink of becoming Provo North. Maybe worse.
Oh goody.
