Hi to all post Mormons from the UK. I am a new member of the group and live and work near London (South East). I would love to hear from any UK exmos. I am an ex Bishop and Stake President with an interesting story. I have even had lunch with Gordon B (that's a story). Do't be shy now. Find my Profile Mesmer1 and send me a message.

Best regards to all.

Gladtahavya, welcome to our community. We will enjoy your comments and, I too, would love to hear your story.
I and my DW are awaiting formal notification that our resignation letter has been officially recorded after nearly 30 years of service to the tscc (the so called church).

I am gonna keep bumping this up till Mesmer1 comes back and elucidates on his experience, particularly with the GA's. This kind of thing interests me. (aka Steve Benson) Just because I like to know what the GA's really think underneath that mystique. (Queen E II is expert at it, Charles not so good!!!)

By the way is Steve Benson's site up yet???

Interesting website.

As a professional hypnotherapist, I am curious about a few things:

a) Do you think Jospeh Smith used a form of hypnosis in the visions of the witnesses of the gold plates or the visions received at the school of the prophets?
b) Did Brigham Young used hypnosis to cause people in the congregation to perceive the countenance of Joseph on him.
c) Does the tone and cadance of conference talks are designed to induce a semi hypnotic state as Luna has suggested.
d) Do you know much about Walters the Magician, the man who trained Joseph in the magical arts, and whether he was a mesmerist?
e) Do you feel that the fervor that religious leaders can induce in their followers is accomplished through a form of hypnosis?
f) Why didn't you hypnotize GBH to come clean about the church when you met with him! Oh wait, is that why he admitted that he doesn't write his own talks at the end of the last conference session? ;)

I look forward to hearing your response!

Awesome questions, a few things that I had wondered myself.

Incidentally, I did read an account of one of the meditation cults, where the ex-cultist had actually seen glowing light around their leader. So it *is* possible to halucinate or have false memories while being influenced in a trace state.

Mormons don't get as tranced out as heavy meditators, and the leaders aren't saying, "If I'm telling the truth, you'll see me glow". But they do hear, "If the Church is true, you'll feel it," while being mildly spaced out.

I wish I knew more about this side of the topic, but unfortunately there don't seem to be many serious books on the topic. I'm particularly interested in altered states. I want NAMES for these various levels of trances, hyper-focused concentration, sleep states, halucination states, all of it. Most books available seem to focus less on the mundane and more on the drug states. :/

I do have a book on order, supposedly the ultimate authority on the matter, Charles Taft's "States of Consciousness". But both of his books were written over 20 years ago, before we knew a lot about neurology. Where are the new studies in this field?? It seems to be very, very important.

Mesmer? Do you know any good books? I don't what to hypnotize anyone, I just want to know about all the identifyable altered states, their names, and what your brain is doing while in them.

Luna

P.S. You know that song, "Spooky" ("Love is kinda crazy with a spooky little boy like you")... So I've been listening to it on CD in the car. I have the first verse memorized. I keep trying to focus on the second verse. So the first chorus will come around, and I think "Ok, THIS time I'll listen carefully to the second verse". Sometime during that chorus, I will space out and my mind will wander, and I will not wake up until the next chorus starts. No matter how much I intend to listen to that second verse, I can't. Likewise with verse 3. Whacky, huh?

The Taft book is a gem. I read it several years ago. I don't think you'll be disappointed!

Which version did you read? There seem to be two titles: "States of Consciousness" and "Altered States of Consciousness". I'm having a hard time figuring out what the differences are, since I only have access to them online.

I think I ended up ordering "Altered" because it was cheaper.
