Hello Everyone,

I just want to apologise for not being around in absolutely ages....Its been a hectic few months or more and my health hasn't been the greatest, but I am alot better since being diagnosed as diabetic and now getting treated. The difference is quite amazing really.

I have skimmed through quite a few of the past threads....very interesting. I really enjoyed the post-mo thread with "You know your a post-mo when" post....I certainly laughed out loud at many of them! How true are they though?! Fantastic! :D

I hope to be around a little more often now...Mmmmm...think I said that a while back....so I really hope to be able to....

Hope everyone is well.

And we hope YOU are well! Goodness, but diabeties is hardly good news. Still, if you're gonna have it, I suppose it's best to treat it! Glad you're feeling better.

Do you need to take insulin or the pill to control your diabetes? I am interested because I am a sugar-baby too. Take care and welcome back. :)

At the moment I am being treated by diet alone, but Dr thinks I should be on metformin to help stabilise my sugar levels further. I am in good hands....the diabetic team have been very helpful.... :)

Nice to hear from you. I am glad you are well or at least getting better.

I like the post by big eddy on how you know you are a post-mormon. " When you think Gordon B. Hinckley's ears look funny."

Can't you just see it? " We are now a world wide organization..... etc" , and behind him are a couple of the apostles quietly passing gas and snickering about his ears. :D

I was diagnosed as type 2 diabetic about a year back. Initially I watched my diet closely and got sugar levels right, but then got lazy. Then I had a prostate scare which made me realize I neeeded to dial my immune system right up, and get serious about several deferred changes in behaviour.

I got onto a good diet, into the gym 3 times a week, took off 10kg thus far (22lbs - and about half that more to go), and about two weeks ago I got a great report from my doctor - PSA levels down, outside the diabetic range, and cardio risk now in the lowest category for my age.

So if any of that is in front of you, I would encourage you to go for it, as it is worth the effort, you will feel heaps better.

The only downside is that I needed lots of new clothes, so I am buying up big time whilst here in the States where jeans are well under half the price of Oz (boy are we being ripped off!)

BTW, another upside of all this is the view in the mirror is better!

Hey Mutleydog, Great to hear your news, and that all is being sorted health wise.

Be good!!!!! (Most of my family are diabetic and they can be really naughty sometimes)

Dad was on Metformine, but all his brothers are insulin based.

My SIL is really, really naughty and refuses to be good.
She is metformine at present, but if she keeps going the way she is, she will end up on insulin too..

Take care now!!!

I have read about symptoms of diabetes but seriously, those of you who have it, what were your symptoms? I've known people who have been diagnosed with it and didn't really have symptoms. What kind of symptoms (subtle or otherwise) should a person look for?

I hope this isn't too personal a question.

Everyone can be different and experience symptoms to a lesser or more severe degree than someone else. Diabetes is also pretty much b/w - you either have it or don't and no-one gets it worse than someone else, though symtoms may be manifest more severely.

There are two types of diabetes:
Type I - where a person's body makes no insulin to regulate the blood sugars and therefore they need to inject insulin.

Type II - where the person's body is able to make insulin, but it may not be enough or work sufficiently.

Both types have the same longer term complications, but manifest themselves in different ways. Type I comes on very quickly (with 2 weeks) and Type II manifests itself over a longer period.

The main symptoms include (though you may not experience all of them):

- increased thirst
- excessive tiredness
- weight loss
- headaches
- irritibleness
- lack of energy
- blurred vision
- sweating
- high blood pressure

I hope this helps.

Interesting that I experienced these same symptoms as I left tscc. :D And I did not pee a lot but I was excessively pissed off.

Damn, I never miss a rest stop and I make beeline for the nearest potty when I get off a plane. I think mine is more related to a condition called old age though.

I'll try not to be too technical,!!! dad's first symptoms, which did include increased thirst, was a sugary substance and soreness on the end of his penis...

Don't know why, but that's how they first got it diagnosed.

I am glad that you are taking the pill and not insulin. I wish I had the pill but I was too young to take the pill at that time. I need insulin which in my opinion is much worse than taking a pill.

With insulin the sugar levels still go up and down and a healthy emotional life depends on the sugar levels. Each of us reacts differently in case of a low blood sugar...for me its depression and for others its nervousness with a short fuse.

But still I have to say I have no idea what a normal life is anymore. Injecting a foreign substance into the body must do something to the general feeling of wholeness that one should have. Take care and get plenty of exercise!!
