Just thought I would link to the FAIR site on this topic, because its the best one that has come up over there in a long time. 'Uncle Dale' knows his early history (particularly on the Nauvoo period) better than most LDS I think and used to be a member of the RLDS (Is that community of christ now?)

Dale Broadhurst is one of the most knowledgeable scholars of early mormon history that I have had the priviledge to know. He was/is? an anchor of rationality on the alt.religion.mormon ng. I am glad he is giving the FAIR guys something to think about! :D

The thread starts out slow but then picks up. I like uncle dale but he does seem to be a little cynical at times. I have conversed with him on other threads at fair. I am not sure if there is any conclusion to be drawn from that whole discussion over there.
I got a little confused with the rlds posts and the lds posts in his explanations.
And yes, the Community of Chirst is the former rlds church.
But it was an interesting thread.

Hey Why me!
How'r you doin'!!!???
I really loved that thread, basically because it is an area that I know nothing at all about. I knew about Ethan Smith's view of the hebrews, but I didn't know about Sidney Rigdon's claims, and I didn't know that there was a possibility that Spalding and Ethan Smith knew each other. Heck I didn't even know about Campbell and his influence.
I love Dale Broadhurst, I don't think he is cynical at all. I think he darn well knows his stuff, but doesn't agree with the leaderships (of the coc) coverup of historical truths to 'protect' their flock. Despite the history, I got the impression that he still has time for the idea that God works in mysterious ways, and that these early men were attempting to weave something better than the religions that were on offer, even if JS was a 'rough stone rolling' as Dale likes to call Joseph.
I learned so much from that thread. He knows his stuff.

Yea you are right. But I was also refering to the Oliver Cowdery thread. I gave him a piece of my mind about ol' oliver. Well okay...I didn't give him a piece of my mind. But I thought that he was a little cynical about Oliver.
I need to go back over there and see what is happening! :)
I am still watching Hearbeat on the 'telly'. Good ol' claude greengrass played by Bill Maynard is off the show. But I hear that he is back on the tv show 'The Royals'! I liked Claude!
