Was it just me, or were others here told that the reason we had water at Sacrament instead of wine was because wine was just plain old grape juice until after the time of Christ?
Seems to me that if it wasn't alcoholic, then the drink probably wouldn't have even survived the 5000+ years to make it to Christ's era, at least not been important enough to mention. I sure don't hear any reports of the origins of orange juice dating back 7000 years! :duh

Wine was clearly alcoholic. That is why it was so prevelant. The alcohol killed off the water born bacteria making it more healthy to drink than water. Prior to modern water sanitation methods it was common for even children in Europe to drink beer.

Yep! My dad, as TBM as he is, told me about this. He also told me about this women he knew at work who went on a group trip to China. She took with her several cases of beer, and refused to drink the water. She was the only one who did not get sick.
I give my parents credit for one thing -- they did teach me that most ingredients in the WoW had some purpose at some times. Some had medicinal properties. In the case of alcohol, I think that if I had gone to China as a TBM and took beer, my parents would have understood.
That was why I started taking caffeine to medicate my ADHD prior to leaving the Church. It is a lot more healthy than Ritalin.
Oddly, my mother still refuses to see the medical benefits of canibis, for, say, sufferers of cancer, MS, etc. :/

Not only this, but I've heard adoring Mormons talk about how Christ would NEVER drink alcoholic wine! :duh It HAD to be grape juice, else Christ himself would be in violation of the Word of Wisdom! Holy Egocentricism, Bateman!
