Here's an article you might find interesting. It’s a bit disconcerting to realize how much influence the Church is gaining in politics, including world politics. Here's a quote from the article that in particular botheres me:
"The Doha conference website gave few clues about the organisation that had been assigned to this important task beyond saying it was based in Utah. In fact, the World Family Policy Centre is an offshoot of Brigham Young University - run by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (the Mormons).
A week after the Doha conference, the government of Qatar put forward a conservative resolution on the family to the UN General Assembly which was approved without a vote, much to the dismay of the European countries and several others."

There is nothing like a joining of (small) minds to whip up a frenzy. Mormonism and (fundy) Islam - now there is a progressive mix! Polygamy might make a comeback, and really get the "F' back into family - the way Brothers Joseph and Brigham intended.
Sounds like a time for some wedge politics.

According to the article, "Among the Mormons' Muslim allies, Qaradawi believes that "resisting the invaders" of Iraq is a religious duty. He has been banned from the US since 1999 on the grounds that he advocates violence and more recently has been accused of supporting suicide bombers....
"[He] has become famous throughout the Arab world for his appearances on al-Jazeera television. He also supervises IslamOnline.net, one of the largest Muslim websites, to ensure that none of its content 'violates the fixed principles of Islamic law'....He believes wife-beating should be done 'lightly' and then only as a last resort."
When people like these are your allies, what does that say about you? That they are only a little further to your right? And does anyone realize that polygamy is legal in most of these countries? We're not talking about the same kind of marriage or family! Or are we?
I remember listening to some Muslim women being interviewed on NPR last year. They made the point that all fundamentalists---be they Arab, Christian, Jewish, (or Mormon) are alike in their treatment of women: Women are made to serve men and be baby factories. This article only reinforces that point. Does Wilkins realize that he and Osama Bin Laden probably see eye-to-eye on these matters?
Is there any way we can get this article picked up by the major news sources here in the U.S.? Thanks, Jeff, for bringing it to our attention. I think this is a significant story.

No kidding! This appears to be a classic incident of "the ends justifies the means." In other words, even if we have to kill you, it's the right thing to do because you'll thank us in the end. This is more of the same thinking that says, "We know what is good for you, and so whatever we have to do, whoever we have to hire, and whoever has to get knocked off is all justified in the end."
I must confess...it makes me nervous.

Man! I find that all very scary indeed!
I know the lds has been funding anti-gay politics for a long while now.....but its scary the potential influence the church may have....
This so needs to be highlighted on a wider news level - i am sure many would be shocked to hear the implications of this story, mormon or non-mormon alike!

It does seem strange the LDS Church is in Doha, since they are pro Israel and have strong contacts with Israel.
The church is a political unit, and business unit, and has entered into area's of influence in many goverments, after all remember part of the LDS doctrine is to dominate the world, and become a world government. Maybe these are baby steps in making this come about.
I agree it is an area of concern, the chruch is branching in these area's, especially since there are so many abuses within it's own system.
However, when the church is making headway in these area's, they also make business headway at the same time, which can be a good part of their motovation.
