This a poll about the Display Modes setting you prefer to use in this forum. Notice that clicking on the Display Mode link above and to the right will drop down a menu that gives you three options. Try each of those options and post your preference in the poll. If you'd like to comment on why you prefer a particular mode please reply to this thread.

This is only a test. You will now be returned to you normal programming. :D

I'm probably just an old dog, but I guess I prefer the forum the way it is. [insert wrinkly old smiley here]

I'm probably just an old dog, but I guess I prefer the forum the way it is. [insert wrinkly old smiley here]I hope there's no misunderstanding, I'm not looking to change the display mode because each person sets their own display mode independent of everyone else. I'm just curious which mode people prefer. I prefer threaded mode so I can see diagram of a thread that shows who has responded to whom, but so far the poll results are showing that I'm in the minority. Oh well! Being a post-Mormon living in Utah working for Mormon family owned company, I’m used to being a minority. :D

Reckon I'm displaying my ignorance here, but I never realized I had an option. Thanks for the short course. I kind of like the hybrid, because it appears that you get the best of both worlds. :duh

Perhaps I just like it because I'm used to it, but the Linear View seems to be a bit easier to read and more convenient to navigate through without having to click a bunch of links.

I can hear Forrest Gump saying (creaky voice) "It is what it is, what it is!"

P_M the interface for the forum you are seeing could be quite different to the one I am, if you chose differently where Jeff denotes.

I tried threaded previously, and whilst it had some advantages, I found it too difficult to track all the new additions.

I cannot fathom what hybrid achieves, possibly based upon me trying it on an unsuitable thread. Can someone shine some light?

BTW, I have my settings such that when I open a thread the latest postings appear at the top. It means I have to skip back a few to get the unread ones, but avoids starting right at the beginning every time.

Daryl

PS: Jeff, BTW interacting in the way I do, I woudl find a 2nd repeat Go button at the top of the page useful, given that its present positions appears designed to best suit the standard interface format. I hope that is not too vague

I vote for the hybrid as well. I like that you can see how the post replies are connected to each other and I like being able to quickly scan down the list of posts quickly.

Oh, and can I just use this space to ask for something, while we're discussing thread preferences?

Can we PLEASE have an "ignore this poster" button? vB supports it and sometimes... it would be really handy to simply pretend some people don't exist.

Thanks.

:: Worries that if we get one, everyone will then be only too happy to "ignore" Dogzilla :o ::

Is there another similar function that vB supports that I'm not aware of? Many of you know more about the various options than I do. I don't have much time to click around and learn them all. Thanks for the recommendations!

I knew if I go to "User CP" I can do that. But when I just clicked on your name, I was given the option to add you to my Buddy list, but not the option to ignore you.

Not that I'd want to ignore you, Jeff! ;) :p

On other message boards, I've seen a button, within a thread next to users' names, where you can click it and that person disappears from the face of the earth.

Or am I just fantasizing again?

I cannot fathom what hybrid achieves, possibly based upon me trying it on an unsuitable thread. Can someone shine some light?

Example of what I'm seeing with hybrid.....
A thread has 10 posts. The "tree" shows at the top showing all the post titles and who replied to who. If I know I've read the first 6, I can click on #7, then only 7 thru 10 are displayed in detail.
Linear mode shows all posts without the "tree". In my example you would see all 10 posts in detail.
Threaded mode shows the "tree" and only one post at a time. If you click on #7, you see only #7.

That's what I'm seeing anyway. Anyone please feel free to correct me if I'm not getting it right. :)

:duhThanks for not wanting to ignore me dozilla. :D Next time I have the time to poke around vBulletin's back door access I'll see if I can switch on that option.

One more thing I just noticed. Jeff posted to this thread after me, but since it was a reply to Dogzilla, in hybrid mode it lists after her post and before mine. They are not in chronological order.
So my idea that clicking on #7 will show you 7 thru 10 is not always true. d'oh!!
Changing my preference back to Linear.
