Quote of the day on lds.org
"If you will accept it in your mind and cradle it in your feelings, a knowledge of the restored gospel and a testimony of Jesus Christ can spiritually immunize your children."
—President Boyd K. Packer
Again putting the guilt on the parents to be faithful in order to keep their kids faithful. :duh
So all those members who have kids that left the church or are struggling with other life issues such as homosexuality just didn't have a strong enough testimony of the church. Better donate more tithing and give more service to the church so that the kids will return to the fold! :Puking
How about advising the parents to spend more time with the kids, talk with them about why they left or are "struggling", and really listen to the answers.

This is getting close to anti-spiritual for my money. No one can do anyone elses spiritual work. This is major guilt manipulation of the worst kind.
Notice once again how the intellect is treated!
'Accept it in your mind' - might be translated as switch off your brain and be a totally passive schmuck. There is no place for your intellect here.
'Cradle it in your feelings' - gooblidook for 'succumb to an emotional experience totally, with no checks and balances to guard against chicanery.

I've posted this before, but what you said is so close to what happened to DW and I, I felt I should bring this up once again.
Before we even thought about doing any research (this was probably a precursor moment), our branch pres. suggested that the reason why our SIL had left tscc may be related to the fact that we were not attending the temple as frequently as we should. WTF!? That got us both really pissed, and DW is/was usually pretty submissive to church leaders. I think that event was the crack in the dike that started the flood.

Sheeesh. And what's his excuse for those kids who parents do "everything" they're supposed to. Whatever. Lame, lame, lame and just a plain assed stupid mentality. Damaging, too.
Makes me so very happy to be away from it.

I wonder how BKP explains the children and grandchildren of the prophets and apostles who have fallen away from the church? Did these "spiritual giants" not have a strong enough testimony of Christ and the restored gospel?

Great reasoning. I like it!

Hmmm, following the logic, maybe said "spiritual giants" didn't do enough. Oh wait, they've got people like Spencer W. Kimball to bail them out. I don't have my copy of "Miracle of Forgiveness" in front of me (or anywhere, for that matter :)), but I believe the idea goes something like this: if parents are good enough, faithful enough, etc., their fallen children WILL join them in the Celestial Kingdom. I was always unsure as to whether this meant that they would be forced to repent, or if they'd get some kind of free pass, or what. Either way, it never made sense.
I absolutely hate the idea that one person is responsible for someone else's salvation, to the point that if Person A screws up, Person B is going to burn in hell. Isn't "Free Agency" supposed to be the overriding principle of their gospel? But if I have control over someone else's salvation, what does that mean for their free agency? Ahh, I'm starting to contemplate a horrible contradiction of Mormonism, maybe I need to go sing a hymn or read my scriptures or something...

That teaching is straight from the mouth of Joseph Smith. Yeah it doesn't make any sense especially since one of the AofF says people will be held accountable for their own sins.

And remember, according to BY, some sins are so grievious that one must sacrifice their life to obtain a forgiveness in the next life. He taught this from the pulpit.
