I read an article today that said some auto insurance companies were offereing a discount on their auto insurance rate for people who attend church regularly. One of the policies would even pay the policy holders tithing donations if they were unable to work due to an auto accident. Apparently religious folks are safer drivers and the companies are trying to cherry pick people who fit certain low risk profiles. Just wondering what people here think about that. Should you have to pay more in insurance rates because God is not your co-pilot?

How would they know if you were realloy attending? Do you get a note from your ecclesiastical leader?

This could show up now as a temple reccomend interview question. Brother Jones are you keeping your auto insurance rates down? Or perhaps it will be issued with the recommend.

Well it appears all is in order brother. Here is your reccomend, and your voucher for a reduced insurance rate. By the way, you know brother Thompson runs an insurance shop don't you?

This is great, the TSCC already has a corner on the magical underwear market. Maybe they could make getting church run insurance a part of the temple ceremony, like right after the washing and anointings "you have been washed, anointed and clothed in the holy garment of the preisthood. You have been pronounced clean and you driving record is clear, you may partake in the blessings of the Temple and our full coverage insurance." marvelous

I call it religious discrimination and wonder how they can get away with it. Imagine them giving better rates to non-blacks or non-Hispanics. You think they’d get away with that? I don’t think so!

This reminds me that we have a credit union here in Utah that requires you to be Mormon in order to be a member. I know because when I went into to open an account, on the application it said I had to be a Mormon in order to qualify. They also let you qualify if you’re not a Mormon but are employed by the church, which still pretty well means that you have to a Mormon. I call it religious discrimination and don’t understand why such things can fly in the US.

I belong to my University Credit Union and they require that you be a student or employee or married to an employee or student. So I suppose the church can do the same thing. There are plenty of other Credit Unions around.
