Hey you guys! I typed in the word 'mormon' on a google search (was trying to find something on religious tolerance.org) and it came up with this site.
What do you think??

I'm not saying that there are not 'offensive' sites on the net. I know there are, but I don't know. This seemed a little eerie to me. Like trying to control information. If they would give a 'good' non mormon site that details information on the LDS church (is there one??/) that would be more objective of them.
Interesting.

Just to add that out of interest I did a general google on the name mormon then mormons, and wheras it used to come up with all kinds of sites on the front page, aside from the ex-mormon foundation it is all now official lds or pro-lds sites.
That really is a big change. I don't know how google prioritises its listings but I think there has been some fairly substantial moves by the LDS faith to make sure they are on the first page.
I do find that kind of eerie. /?????

Grief,.
and LDS
I have a feeling that there has been a conserted effort by the church to ensure that google listings come up with pro stuff first. How would they do that???
Clever!! Very business savvy!, but slightly manipulative in the control of information...

MaryThat is kind of eerie, but if you do a Google search on Post-Mormon or post mormon we come up as #3 in the listing. :D

MaryThe More Good Foundation (what a corny name) pays Google and I assume other search tools to keep their ad at the top of the page. I see it as a desperate attempt by the church or by members (possibly funded by the church??) to control people's access to information. Let them try though; it’s a battle they can’t win. It’s like trying to stand in the middle of a river to keep the water from going downstream.

Mary"WE" just came up as one and two. This is a we thing as far as I'm concerned. ;) I just got it started.
Once we get our billboards up, and it WILL happen this year, then people will start searching more on post mormon. Tjohnson knows how to work things so that eventually we'll rank near the top for searches using other things, like ex-mormon, mormon, and even lds. We're just not there yet but will be eventually. I bear you my testimony that this is true. ;)

Ha!!! :)
Thanks for making my day. I did mean the 'royal' you, as in the site as a whole honest!!!!
What a hoot, and all I wanted to do was see if there was anything on mormons on religioustolerance.org!!!
I guess you can't blame the church for wanting to get to the top of the google tree. Perhaps I was being too negative!!!
And I bear my testimony that that is true too!!!! :D

Okay, I have to retch for a moment...

This was nausiating, though thankfully brief. Here's the golden nugget from the front page of this site:
If you were to search for the Church's official name, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, you would find an official Web site with great information. The same is true when searching for the term LDS. Historically the Church and its members prefer using these terms instead of the common nickname Mormon, which derives from the Book of Mormon.
Because the term Mormon is a nickname it is often used by anti-Mormons: critics who resort to name-calling and slander. For this reason many search results that contain these terms will often return results that are unreliable, insulting and offensive to Church members.
You can find official information directly from the LDS Church at www.mormon.org. If you are LDS and would like to help create better content for the Web, please visit the Web site for the More Good Foundation.
Got that? If you aren't a faithful Mormon providing good, faith-promoting information about the Church, then you are "unreliable, insulting and offensive." In other words, an anti-Mormon. While I'll grant that they say, "...is often used by anti-Mormons...", still, the inference is clear: If you want to know what the Mormons believe, the ONLY reliable source is the Mormons.
Ever heard THAT line before?
Yeah, me too...
I suggest we begin a whole new movement in which we refer to people as Anti-LDS, since historically "the Church and its member prefer using that term."

::wipes mouth::I find it ironic that they tag former Mormons with the anti-mormon label, a label that leans toward name calling and slander, then ridicule the same for name calling and slander.

I need to read it again, but it does seem to insinuate that if it is not a church site then it is 'anti'. I think the people that will most 'get' the insinuation behind that term 'anti' are active mormons. Though someone over on FAIR suggested that historically 'anti's', those against early mormonism were quite happy to define themselves as such, but that was pre holocaust when the term 'anti' took on a whole new meaning.
Just my opinion..

Hilarious!
It's also pretty funny that they "prefer" not to use the name "mormon", but the web site they send you to is
www. mormon .org.
