Hi everyone,
New poster here, been posting a lot on belief.net, but recently left the church after being a convert for a here (I'm in SLC). Anyway, I started a website designed to promote equality and tolerance...I'm selling wristbands for AIDS research on it too.

Please check it out, but I'm hope I'm not breaking any rules. Thanks.

In light of the recent talk of gay issues on our forum I don't see where any rules have been broken. Just be careful not to use this forum to market any products.

One topic we haven't touched yet on this forum is AIDS. I was thinking the other day, after watching Angels in America how I don't hear much about AIDS anymore. I have always tried to be careful to not classify AIDS as a gay disease - it impacts all races, cultures, classes of people.

Do you have any recent statistics? I am especially interested in AIDS in the Mormon culture and in the Utah area.

I am just curious why we don't hear so much about it in the news anymore. Or am I being oblivious to it? (I do read the paper every day and watch CNN)

Yeah, I definitely don't want people to think it's a "gay" disease either. As far as stats go...Utah reported 1,098 cases from

Searching for stuff on Mormons in particular, but not seeing anything yet.

As one Australian on this site, I watch US response (reaction?) to AIDS with interest, so Utard with even more interest.

Australia, as a land settled by convicts (not Puritans), took a very pragmatic response to the AIDS risk very early by establishing free needle-exchange programs, we had one of, or the best containment of the spread of AIDS in the Western World. Not that we were free of moralizing ostriches who saw that as encouraging IV drug use, and would prefer to see drug addicts die AND spread the disease. But at the end of the day, the pragmatists won the day.

By comparison, I observed the US for the most part seemed to get all anal about that, so AIDS became a bigger problem on a per capita basis.

Now I would expect that as Utard is more fundy, more reactionary, more judgemental, and more dysfunctional in its response to homosexuality (so therefore one would expect a more dangerous culture of closeted gays in denial), many of the ingredients were in place for a real blow out in AIDS infection rates in Utard.

So I watch any data on this closely and with interest.

Interesting and not surprising. Many Americans are more worried about giving the message that it's okay rather than addressing the real problem.
