To me both are strange religions with weird beliefs which are cults, but its interesting how the MOs have moved their strange belief to become a mainstream religion while the jehovahs have done such a poor job of marketing themselves. Just wanted to see what everyone thought of this.

My thought: mainstream is in the eye of the beholder. Maybe it seems mainstream to you because you live in the corridor. Maybe it seems that way so you can cope with the fact that you were once sucked into the cult. But out here where I live, in the heart of the Bible Belt... not only are the Mormons not mainstream, they're barely a blip on the radar. If people here are familiar with Mormonism at all, it's to point out what a cult it is. This is the stronghold for the Baptist Convention. To them, mormons are just wannabe mainstream. :p

* Note: That's why I have to post here: there's no one around within 1,000 miles that I know, who has heard of mormonism and can have an intelligent conversation about it.

Not that I would defend SLC and the MOs but they are considered mainstream in the western states, especially AZ, CA, ID, WY, etc.

Hell, around here, they ARE the stream! The whole friggin' river!

Dogzilla is adrift in a sea of Baptists and otherwise "Good Krist-chuns", who are pretty sure Mormons eat their young...

:D

I have a different perspective on this.

Over here in the UK I would say that LDS and JW are viewed in a very similar fashion, accept that LDS probably get some kudos in 'some' circles for their business acumen and reputation.

The fact that LDS and JW are viewed as the same types of organisation....of US 19th century origin....I think may be the reason that JW's used to be so hated by many English members of the church.

Jw's are the only other group whose members regularly go door to door over here, witnessing, and who have exclusive truth claims. The modern chapels are very similar and they ask and expect the same level of devotion and commitment, albeit on a longer time scale. (We had a modern Kingdom Hall built at the end of our road before we just moved).
