SALT LAKE CITY - Utah has launched an organized-crime investigation into a polygamist sect and its fugitive leader Warren Jeffs, now on the FBI's 10 Most Wanted list. Jeffs is already wanted on Utah and Arizona charges alleging he arranged plural marriages of underage girls. Attorney General Mark Shurtleff said Monday that his office is also looking at Jeffs and his church for "double books, cooking books, offshore accounts and fraud."

:: points and laughs ::

I saw Larry King last night -- he interviewed Jeffs's (oh shit, what was my possessive plural rule again? :o ) nephew and some former wives, the Attorney General of Utah -- a bunch of people who all have an interest in seeing this guy taken out. It really sounded like several governmental agencies, not the least of which includes the FBI, the States of Utah and Arizona, and several other entities are getting really close to grabbing the guy while enroute from one compound to another. (There's one or two in Texas and IIRC, don't they own land in Florida, Helemon?) Anyway, it's a matter of time, but they're all worried about another Waco or Ruby Ridge and they don't want any of the wives or children to get hurt, so this is going to be tricky. I think the worst thing that could happen would be if they killed him -- if he's martyred, his cult will only have that much more power. It's good to see the authorities go after him with a shotgun approach -- the charges range from welfare fraud to rape.

Yeah. This'll be a train wreck to watch.

The cynic in me asked, is it any coincidence that they turn up the heat on this guy just at a time when a certain TV show about polygamy is making life uncomfortable and its history embarrassing for MoInc.

What would look better than a sacrificial lamb going to the slaughter to underline the idea that ModernMcMo does not do this s#it? Well OK, MoInc can't be seen to do that, but Utah government is seen as the next best thing for many people.

But then maybe I am bitter and twisted! :cool:

I do think the popularity of Big Love has raised peoples awareness of polygamy and I wouldn't be suprised if there weren't some high place Mormon officials who have been trying to increase the pressure on the government to do something about this guy. I also bet that the church is hoping this all gets wrapped up before the 08 elections. I think polygamy is something that Mitt will likely get grilled on.

I don't know. Its the SLC church that owns the big cattle ranch in FL. Wouldn't be suprised though if Jeffs didn't own some property down there as well. But why would anyone want to be a polygamist in FL when there is such an active swinger scene there? All the fun and none of the responsibility! :D lol

I agree they shouldn't let him become a martyr but if he is just put in prison he can still control his flock just like all those gang leaders do when they are behind bars. Even if he is killed there will likely be another sick f*ck to step into his shoes and keep the whole scam going.

Oh, look, I found the thread... that I started. :duh

Go here. (http://www.postmormon.org/forum_vb/showthread.php?t=849&highlight=Warren+Jeffs) He was trying to buy property down here. I am still outraged.The link in the original thread is now dead, but I'm sure we could google and find out if he managed to acquire anything near Leesburg.

According to a current thread on RfM the swinging scene in UT is pretty active as well, even among active members. :eek:
