It didn't take long before I began to suspect that the divide in Utah has far less to do with theology than it does psychology. Secure and tolerant people reach across the gulf. Bigots and fools condemn out of hand.

I liked this bit....

One reader, apparently LDS, objected to my observation that Mormons are so numerous in Utah it is impossible to drive anywhere without running over one.
OK, I probably should have phrased that in a kinder, gentler way. Maybe I should have said it's impossible to swing a dead cat in Utah without hitting a Mormon, or that we're thicker than thieves. However, the response from cat owners and thieves would have been worse.
I'm thinking what we need are some "I Brake for Mormons" bumper stickers.

Does this need to be a sticky thread? Starting to have to scroll down a long way to get to the new/current threads.

I made it a sticky because Kirby always seems to have at least one good insightful and funny quote in his article each week and didn't want the thread to get lost on the second or third page of quotes. If others don't feel that it should be a sticky I will unstick it. I didn't mean to abuse my modetorial powers. ;)

"For me, it's a full-time job simply remembering how many Ten Commandments there are."

and...

"we're more absorbed with being proud that God is on our side than we are in being humble enough to be on his. "

Helemon... thanks for introducing me to this guy. Coming from Australia, the Salt Lake Tribune is not my first source of on line news, but after you posted this I thought I'd read a few of his back articles.... very insightful. The fact that he seems to offend everyone in Utah, mormon and non-mormon alike, probably means he's got it close to just right.

He has been a favorite of mine for a number of years. If you do a search on Kirby you will pull up several posts here with great quotes from past articles. He is the hero of the jack mormon or cultural mormon. He isn't afraid to speak his mind or speak truth to power.
