I ran across this via another New York Times link, and thought y'all might find it interesting.

So, my fellow post-moers, as you peruse the info here as you sip your latte, I'm curious...what say ye? ;)

I haven't read the whole article, although I have printed it and will read it tonight. I have come to the conclusion that tithing was a historical event that no longer applies in this day. It was, as stated in the article, to be used to feed and maintain those that dedicated their lives to maintaining the temples (Levite Preist?).

Today, churches need our money so they can build buildings and temples and malls and such to make themselves richer. I rather like the quote about giving to the needy not the greedy suits it SLC [added for emphasis]

I read something like this a while back Mamajame, thanks for reminding me of it.

As an active church member it was always something that I accepted without question, based on the Malachi scriptures, but it seems that the current LDS practice has very little to do with what tended to happen in both old and new testament times.

In terms of spiritual progression it really does all boil down to money. The widow's mite is of no relevence to the modern day church in my opinion. 10% given in money, on gross, or your eternal salvation is in peril, as well as the fact that you will eventually burn...oh well.

I tend to think that the offering tray passed around confidentially is more scriptoral than what goes on within the LDS church.
