hi all,

I received the take-home essay portion for my BoM midterm yesterday. Students in the class were allowed to pick between taking the easy exam or the hard one. I picked the hard one, of COURSE! What good would all that brainwashing BE if I took the easy test? I sympathize with you, somedude1, about the religion classes!

Anyway, I want you to tell me how I should answer this question: "What are some of the tactics of the anti-christ confronted by Alma that you could also hear during your life?"

I was going to list the following:
~ "Coke is not a big friggin' deal, quit being so damn anal."
~ "Victoria's Secret underwear is way more comfortable and sexy than that weird white stuff."
~ The temple's Holiest of Holies is actually just a normal room that is undoubtedly way over-worshipped by the ignorant masses of Morons."
~ " You should try thinking for yourself: not only is it productive, useful, enlightening, and preferred, but it's also fun!"
~ "Women don't have to have eight children to be of worth in society."
~ "The priesthood is a figment of the chauvinistic and insecure male member mind."
~ "In fact, just trying to oppose us so-called 'anti-christs' just goes to show how insecure you really are, and how much denial you're really allowing yourself to indulge in."
~ "Go watch a rated-R movie. You'll like it."

So what do you think? Will it get me an A? An A - for Apostate? :D

This is a CLASSIC example of Joe being all "profound" and his supposed anti-Christ withering before his hero's AMAZING logic: From Alma 30:39-41

39 - "Now Alma said unto [Korihor]: Will ye deny again that there is a God, and also deny the Christ? For behold, I say unto you, I know there is a God, and also that Christ shall come.

40 - "And now what evidence have ye that there is no God, or that Christ cometh not? I say unto that ye have none, save it be your word only.

41 - "But, behold, I have all things as a testimony that these things are true; and ye also have all things as a testimony unto you that they are true; and will ye deny them? Believest thou that these things are true?

This is the classic "go ahead and prove the negative, I dare ya" argument. Listen carefully..."What evidence do you have that Christ will not come?" is the question that Alma stumps Korihor with. Korihor, by the way, makes a LOUSY anti-christ if he can't handle THAT one!

And I love how Alma says, essentially, "You say it's not true, but I say it is true, and I'm right, so there, neener neener." Ultimately, the only way Alma wins is to smite Korihor dumb, resorting to "my magic is stronger than your magic" logic, which would be great, except you don't get to see much in the way of smiting these days, do you? Damn, where IS that smiter...I could sure use it tonight...

So, answer the question with, "Prove to me that Joseph didn't beat Emma." Or "Prove to me Brigham and Heber were never 'intimate' with each other." Ultimately, you can play the "prove to me" card on anything yet to happen, and you cannot prove a thing...you can only lean on what the prophets and scriptures say, and they can not be "proven" by anything but faith...which proves nothing. So for instance, "Prove to me that Christ will come again." "Prove to me that two Elders will be killed in the streets of Jerusalem at the beginning of the millenial period." These are not knowable...they can only be believed in, and so Alma is actually playing dirty with Korihor (who is too stupid to recognize what is going on), and the Saint's are just amazed as hell at Alma's brilliant and dizzying logic and testimony when all it is is first-grade philosophy (of men, mingled with scripture... :D ).

Have your BoM instructor prove to me the reality of Alma. I have zero confidence in his Book of scripture, so he'll have to use other means of proving him to me...

There now--that ought to get you excommunicated.... :)

I had to chuckle when I read your comment about, "where is that smiter?" Makes me think of the Mua'deeb button I need in my car.

See, if you haven't seen the movie Dune, there's a scene in which the hero learns to fight with a special technique involving a voice box and some "witchcraft." The point is, some words have so much power, they can be used as killing words. The hero's name is Mua'Deeb. While Mua'Deeb is teaching this killing word technique to some unwashed masses, someone calls his name with the voice box on and Mua'Deeb learns that his very name is also a killing word.

Many, many times I have been cut off in traffic and screamed at the offender, "MMUUUUAAAA-DEEB!" Only to have the other driver NOT instantly vaporized.

I suspect the Mua'Deeb button that should be in my car (and isn't) is very similar to that smiting thing.

P.S. How can you smite someone dumb if the very act would imply you've used witchcraft?
