Many Utahns believe most of the state's residents are college graduates. The truth, however, is that while a significant number of Utahns attend college, many never earn four-year degrees.
In Utah, 30.2 percent of residents age 45 to 64 have four-year degrees, ranking the state 12th in the nation in that age group. But among Utahns age 25 to 34, only 26 percent have degrees, dropping the state's rank to 31st nationwide.
In addition, in the past 10 years, the percentage of Utahns age 25 to 34 with bachelor's degrees has slipped from 41 percent to 26 percent.
University of Utah President Michael Young calls the decline "serious." He fears Utahns are beginning not to take it as an "article of faith" that their children need to finish college.

Hmmmm, could it be that the low amount that Utah pays for k-12 education is finally biting them in the butt? Could it be that the kids are not prepared for college? Could it be that by telling girls that their place is in the home not the work force that a lot of the Mormon girls drop out as soon as they get married?

Financial data show it's impossible to support a family on $22,000 or less in today's world. Those who try need public assistance, which strains state budgets. If the number of less-educated people continues to increase, fewer tax dollars will be collected and state revenue will falter. The scenario worsens when you add in recent projections that Utah's college-age population will grow slowly or not at all during the next 10 years. Fewer tax dollars invested in eductation today means fewer tax dollars collected down the road!!!

* Many high school graduates are not prepared for college or the workplace. :duh
