View Full Version : Problems with spam

As some of you might have noticed, spam posted in our forum seems to be on the rise. Between me and the moderators we've been dealing with it by deleting the spam posts when they are noticed (I hope the moderators don't mind me doing some of the deleting).

In the past I found that banning the usernames of those who post spam has taken care of the problem, but this weekend I plan to take it a step further and make sure that their IP addresses are also banned. Hopefully that will take care of most of the problem.

Alternatively, build into the registration process a hurdle, like 'What was the name of Joseph's Smith first wife?' Mos or postmos could remember or find the answer to that pretty quickly.

Spammers probably could not be bothered and move on to easier targets.

The question is whether the spam is from random spammers or if they are targeting the site because of its content and topic. If this is targeted spam intended to disrupt the forum then the person likely knows the answer to mormon questions. They probably think their actions will be blessed by God. What if a never-mo wants to join? Also, those answers are easy to find on the web. Maybe we should develop a system of secret handshakes? What is that? 8==D The first token of the penishood or sign of the rod. What is that? (o)(o) second base. :D

The idea of requiring them to post responses to a few threads before allowing them to start a new thread may be a good idea. Reporting them to their ISP is another idea.
