While reading thru some old stuff I had saved and thinking about my 16 year hell on earth with the ex, it occurred to me that the Mormon belief system really has a lot in common with OCPD. Just read this brief summary:
“Persons with Obsessive Compulsive Personality Disorder (OCPD) are typically deeply entrenched in their dysfunctional beliefs and genuinely see their way of functioning as the "correct" way. Their overall style of relating to the world around them is processed through their own strict standards. While generally their daily experience is such that "all is not well," they tend to be deeply committed to their own beliefs and patterns. The depth of ones belief that "my way is the correct way" makes them resistant to accepting the premise that it is in their best interest to let go of "truth owning." Yet letting go of truth is paramount in their recovery. For the purposes of this article "truth" is defined as a person's rigidly held belief which s/he feels is universally applicable. Most often, blame for ones internal strife, is placed on external circumstances or the environment.”

Originally posted by Lucyfer on RfMSo, does Mormonism tend to make people OCPD or do OCPD types gravitate toward the religion? If you're “born under the covenant" this becomes a particularly interesting question and I don't claim to know the answer.

[Edit: This reminds me of a couple of sentences from our home page statement: "We ... believe that loving one's neighbor begins with giving up the claim to have special access to truth. We feel that arrogance attends the illusion of “knowing the truth” and that such arrogance leads to a narrow-minded tribalism that impedes personal growth and fosters a divided community." In other words, it ain't healthy!]

I don't know Jeff, but I am not in denial about my own undiagnosed OCD. I'm not quite as bad as Howard Hughes and I don't wash my hands 100 times a day, but there are a lot of little obsessive/compulsive behaviors that indicate to me that I'm just one stressor away from hospitalization!

:: arranges things neatly on my desk in an east-west alignment ::My desk could stand a little OCPD applied to it. I think I must have OCDD (obsessive compulsive disaster disorder, dontcha know).

Oh, here, let me rearrange all your piles aphabetically. I'll color-code your dress shirts with your ties in your closet while I'm at it.
Yes, all the food can labels are facing outward in my pantry. The books and CDs are alphabetized and yes, my clothes are all filed in the closet by color. Why do you ask?
Send help. I'm sick, dude.

:: Aligns Jeff's stapler with his telephone ::Have you ever watched the TV show called "Monk"? It's about a crime solver who is just as you describe.
And guess what... once you brought it up I couldn't quit thinking about it until I reached over and aligned my stapler with my phone! Thanks a lot.

I've seen Monk and, while I'm not quite that bad... I can totally relate. Like I said, I'm just a nasty divorce (or some other major stressor) away from being right there myself. Sometimes I leave things messy on purpose just to prove that I can.
Upon preview, that's just hilarious. What a freak.
