Helemon,
Thanks for posting that. Sure rated a saved hyperlink for me.
I saw a SBS/PBS program here once on that history, and seeing the 'genealogy' of Apocalyptic thinking is a very informative process.
I think the use of some basic psychology to scrutinize and dissect how the defeated Israelites explained their losses is also valuable. How can you take a loss believing you are God's Chosen?
Either you let God down by breaking his commandments and this is a lesson in observance, or
You were beaten by a superior culture, and God (if He/She exists) is no more committed you than to your enemy, or does not exist at all.
The former is far more attractive to an ego-centric people, and of course it can be run out again and again, every time you fall upon hard times (and is particularly useful and effective if the people are too lazy, stupid or ignorant to read history and websites such as this/that).
Thanks again for finding and posting a site like that.

"The beginning of Christ's Millennium according to some Mormon literature, such as the publication Watch and Be Ready: Preparing for the Second Coming of the Lord. The New Jerusalem will descend from the heavens in 2000, landing in Independence, Missouri. (McIver #3377, Skinner p.100)"
And you'd never guess who sells it:

And as if MoInc didn't get it wrong again, the fundy Mos were at it too, but they fared no better on teh date:

But even US Presidents can be smitten by this disease:
Ronald Reagan, in a 1980 interview with Jim Bakker, said, "We may be the generation that sees Armageddon." Before that, in 1971, Reagan commented to James Mills regarding events in Libya, "For the first time ever, everything is in place for the Battle of Armageddon and the Second Coming of Christ." Obviously, Reagan thought that the end would come SOON! And to think that a man with apocalyptic delusions like this had his finger on the nuclear button for 8 years. (Grosso p.8)
So this stupidity knows no bounds. This has got to be the best predicted non-event in all of mankind's history.
