Can anyone tell me why the Church supporst Boy Scouts so avidly but not the Girl Scouts. My husband asked our Bishop and he said that it was probably because they didnt believe in God.... My husband promptly corrected him by reciting the GS promise that states the belief in God. Our suspicion is that because GS promotes independence and reliance on yourself this is the true reason that the Church doesnt support GS.
The Bishop then tells us that the Church has a great program for Young Women and that they dont need GS's. Well if that is the case then why did my 13 year old daughter finish all but 1 thing in the first year. She still had 3 years left to go with nothing to do. It was this incident that first started our pull away from the Church. Very frustrating considering we worked so hard to go through the Temple. :(

I would suspect that GS might be suspected by many Mos as filling girls heads with the idea that life might offer more than supporting hubby and being a baby-factory (See the thread on 'perfect Mo womanhood'). And that might threaten a favoured world view.

By comparison BS supports the existing male-gender typecasting.

If women started to get empowered they might be less satisfied with the status quo, and think, and ask questions, and that would be a bummer, cause Moism does not have too many substantial answers in its kitbag!

Well, that, and we'd be able to start fires all by ourselves. :D

Each ward I've lived in I've tried to encourage leaders to allow some kind of girl scouting. Each time I was sent to the stake president and every single time I was told that the church does not care for the focus it puts on independence, education, and careers that Girls Scouts offers. It is against the church's values of womanhood. Yeah, it was one of those times I got released from a calling because I complained LOUDLY about it.

Not long ago they came up with "Achievment Days" for girls age 8 and up. It was supposed to be something like scouting but it has turned into another "Young Women's" program for the younger girls. What a joke. Get 'em while they're young, I guess.

I lived in an Oz mission, so Church scouting was thin on the ground, but did exist. That the Church presented so much resistance to GS is both news to me, and further proof of what a damned fem-unfriendly, reactionary, retarded place Moism is.

How do Mo professional women get on? Do they have to endure a constant barrage of messages that they are "bad", conspiring against the natural order of things, essentially spitting in God's eye? The picture is looking more like the worst of fundy Islam every day.

Wow, the more of the BIG Picture of Mormonism I see, the sicker it gets. And to think I walked having only seen a fraction of what I now see!

Talk about Mo-mushrooms!

I've always found it interesting that the church has pushed women to become educated but not WORK outside the home. Here in Utard there is a good mix of professional Mo women as well as stay at home Mos. There really isn't much choice - most women including moms whether they are Mo or not HAVE to work outside the home.

Which IMO, puts pressure and stress on the man in the household. Pressure to be able to provide so that his wife can be home and have babies.

I've watched my son in law struggle with this. He and my daughter married very young just like they were supposed to. SIL didn't go on a mission. He has IBS and doesn't go far from home. SIL goes through MAJOR bouts of depression always focusing on what he DOESN'T or isn't CAPABLE of. He has so much going for him!!!! He has a very decent job. He bought a home a few years ago when he was barely 21 a couple years after he and daugther married. They have a beautiful baby. He was recently called to be in the Elder's Quorum presidency. He has everything he wants. (or THINKS he wants) And still fights depression on a daily basis. He has been on several medications but nothing seems to help him COMPLETELY. He never feels adequate. Always feels there isn't enough money (he refuses however to give himself a 10% raise instead of donating to Pres Hinckley), feels he isn't good enough, isn't a good hubby or provider. But he is!!! My daughter works outside the home at the elementary school. We watch the baby so they don't have to pay daycare or worry about her.

Anyway, my point I guess is that the pressure the church bestows upon the women in the church spills over to the men. It's a domino effect.

I remember back growing up in Detroit boy and girl scouts were a big thing as after school activities. We were not Mormon, didn't live in a Mo area, etc. But I remember well my mother being a den mother for a short time and having to tag along with her while she did her thing with the cub scouts after school. A lot of Mos think it's a church thing if they haven't lived outside Mo land.
