On this scenario, Post-Darwinian super-minds will go on to rewrite the vertebrate genome, redesign our whole global ecosystem, and abolish suffering and cruelty throughout the living world.

Why do Utopian visions of the future always make me giggle? Humans, if they survive as a species for another century are not going to be able to eliminate "suffering and cruelty throughout the living world" unless they eliminate all life through out the living world. I hate to tell them this but as Wesley (the pirate not the preacher) said, "Life is pain princess, anyone who tells you otherwise is selling you something!" No matter what technological advances humans make there will still be pain, still be suffering, still be inequalities, still be some people who have more and others who have less. The processes of natural selection operate in any system where resources are limited thus necessitating competition and evolution. Humans can think that their advanced technology has removed them from the power of mother nature but as global warming and drug resistant bacteria are proving all we have done is delayed the inevitable smack down.
