Today in one of the local newspapers. (People & Places Cedar City and the Surrounding Area)
All pets invited to receive blessing. If humans can have spirituality in their lives, their pets can too, right?
Of course they can, said Pastor Mark Ramsperger, of the Cedar City United Methodist Church, who will host a pet blessing today at 6 p.m. at the Main Street Park in Cedar City.
All animals are invited. “he said. “even if you have a cockroach for a pet. They are all God’s animals.”

The Blessing of the Animals isn't anything new. The Episcopal Church (Church of the Frescoes here in this area) has a blessing of the animals ceremony on the first Sunday each October. DW and I stumbled into the service by accident last week when we got up and decided to visit one of Bishop Spong's churches. As we walked up to the service, which we noted pleasantly, was being held outdoors in a beautiful mountain setting, was loaded with dogs, a cat, and at least one bird (the cage of which was covered by a gay pride towel) and belonged to one of the women helping conduct the service. It was all very nice and there was a familial feeling throughout the congregation. The message seemed to be one that is more of hope for things to come, rather than preaching guilt and intimidation.
We learned later that St. Francis is the patron saint of the animals and the blessing of the animals service is a very old tradition.
The whole thing was very layed back and we felt very welcome by the Clergy and members alike. I sure like wearing a Tshirt, jeans, sandals and a sport coat to church :-). At one point the Clergy (what ever the leader is called and his helpers) went around the congregation and patted each animal. The other Clergy followed along behind passing out treats for the little critters. We were told that, in the past, there have been goats and horses, etc. present at these services.
All in all, it was a very good experience and, it appears, that they have a very liberal outlook on women serving as Clergy and about their congregation's/clergy's sexual orientation, which we found very refreshing as well.
We'll probably go back at some point in the future.
