Ohio Executes Cult Leader for 5 Killings

Oct 24, 11:23 AM (ET)

By JOHN McCARTHY
LUCASVILLE, Ohio (AP) - Ohio executed a religious cult leader Tuesday for murdering a family of five followers who were taken one at a time to a barn, bound and shot to death. The youngest was a girl just 7 years old.

Jeffrey Lundgren, 56, died by injection at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility. "I profess my love for God, my family, for my children, for Kathy (his wife). I am because you are," Lundgren said in his final statement.

The evidence against him in the deaths of the Avery family - Dennis, 49, Cheryl, 46, Trina, 15, Rebecca, 13, and 7-year-old Karen - was compelling.

Upset by what he saw as a lack of faith, Lundgren arranged a dinner hosted by cult members. Afterward, he and his followers led the family members one by one - the father first, young Karen last - to their deaths while the others unknowingly cleaned up after dinner.

Lundgren shot each victim two or three times while a running chain saw muffled the sound of the gunfire.

Lundgren argued at his trial in 1990 that he was prophet of God and therefore not deserving of the death penalty.

"It's not a figment of my imagination that I can in fact talk to God, that I can hear his voice," he had told the jurors. "I am a prophet of God. I am even more than a prophet."
Lundgren formed the cult with about 20 members in the northeast Ohio town of Kirtland after he was dismissed in 1987 as a lay minister of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, an offshoot of the Mormon Church.

He said God commanded him, through interpretation of Scriptures, to kill the Avery family, who had moved from Missouri in 1987 to follow his teachings.

Lundgren's attorneys had tried to put off the execution, arguing that he should be allowed to join a lawsuit challenging Ohio's use of lethal injection as cruel and unusual punishment. They said his execution had more of a chance of being painful because he was diabetic and overweight at 275 pounds.

Late Monday, the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati issued an order allowing the execution to go forward. The U.S. Supreme Court refused a last-minute request to stop his execution Tuesday, and Gov. Bob Taft denied clemency.

Thirteen cult members were charged in the case, including Lundgren's wife, Alice, now 55, and their son, Damon, now 35, both serving life prison terms.

Ok fine, then shoot him! Hey Puff, do you think this guy really talked with God? How do you seperate the delusions of this killer and those of JS and the witnesses?

You know, I graduated from high school in 1987. I grew up in a town about 3 hours southwest of Kirtland. Somewhere near the end of high school (soph, maybe junior year) they did a Pioneer Days thingy around that neck of the woods. I toured the Kirtland Temple around that era. It's entirely possible that I have either met or rubbed shoulders with that guy.

Anyway, a little more light reading (http://www.amazon.com/Prophet-Death-Mormon-Blood-Atonement-Killings/dp/0735100454/sr=8-1/qid=1161714653/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/104-9054102-5059934?ie=UTF8&s=books) on the topic, if anyone is interested. I read this book early in college.

I went and read the reviews of this book, and that, all by itself, is both interesting and entertaining (with a little "wing-nut" thrown in for good measure.)

You know, maybe we should all be glad that the mormon church is led by businessmen who only get good feelings on topics rather than men who really believe God is talking to them.

Ok fine, then shoot him! Hey Puff, do you think this guy really talked with God? How do you seperate the delusions of this killer and those of JS and the witnesses?i bet he was talking to somebody out there , just like the guy who killed John Lennon ,its a familar pattern for mass murderes , phsycic paranormal , usually linked to the human condition of psychosis , how do you know the difference between god and the devil , that actually could be quite tricky as they both communicate through a supernatural means , remember joseph smiths visions where seen by four different people , if i heard a voice one day i might be delusional , but if i was with four other people who all saw or heard it as well , that would have to be some kind of reality , the only other way of telling if a vision is good or bad , is judging what comes out of it , joseph smiths visions have caused millions of people to believe in a better world , that actually does stand for something , certainly went a bit further than most paranormal encounters, another case is charles manson , i,m sure there is a paranormal connection to that one as well , theres a real power there at work , better say your prayers quick ////

the devil can write scipture for his own purpose ... Hamlet

the devil can assume a pleasing shape

the devil can appear as an angel of light

the devil holds the earth in terrible chains enoch

the devil desires all men to be miserable like unto himself joseph smith

the devil and his angels laugh

the devil is the father of lies

the devil can decieve even the very elect

the devil makes war with the children of god

the devil rants and crys aloud , i am the son god

the devil sits in a temple even as god sits

when a man is possesed by the devil , he will have no conscience , neither will he recognise good or evil any more

how do you know the difference between god and the devil,
I quit putting any stock in the Devil years before I quit putting stock in God.

Of course, the believers will just assume that the Devil has me in his grasp. I counter that with "God has you in His," which in my mind, is equally as unfortunate in terms of just enjoying life.

But that's why I live in Outer Darkness, eh?

But that's why I live in Outer Darkness, eh?yep you do , an so do i .
actually i was reading a site the other day on devil worship , strangely enough it had lots of good information which made quite a lot of sense ,
for instance , why do people constantly castigate peadophiles but tv constantly advertises younger and younger sex ( becuase the devil made them do it ) see makes perfect sense

how does the war on terror equate to 630,000 dead civilians in iraq , simple , the devil did it all , all wars come from lust , and the devil is the father of all lusts ,

so the devil worshipers actually have it right , because to worship the true god of this world , you would have to worship a god of chaos , lust and inhuman torture ,

are i see your eyes are opened , you must eat some of this fruit ( hehe ) it will make you wise , then you will be as the gods , knowing good and evil , then you can comprehend that everything has to have an opposite , light and darkness , virtue and vice , pleasure and pain , ( evil grin of knowingness )
so you must eat , because this is how god gained his knowlege, woops , i thought god wasn,t capable of evil , but i think your right , being posessed of the devil doesn,t seem a whole lot worse than being posessed of god , being posessed by anything seems to be really really bad
