From Paris to the Philippines and from Moscow to Myanmar, the Mormon leader has seen the graves of those who died in battle.
"As I have visited these various cemeteries, I have reflected first on the terrible cost of war," Hinckley, the 96-year-old leader of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, said in a devotional address before more than 20,000 BYU students gathered at the Marriott Center on the Provo campus. "What a fruitless thing it so often is, and what a terrible price it exacts."

Hmmmm. Why didn't he realize this prior to the invasion of Iraq?:duh

This is interesting to me...

"What a fruitless thing it so often is,"
I don't think the Dali Lama would have qualified that, or any other truly peace-oriented spiritual leader. War is fruitless. Period. Regardless of the circumstances--your borders attacked, a revolution, whatever--it is always in response to someone acting immorally. I don't disagree that sometimes it might be unavoidable, but it is always the result of immoral behavior SOMEWHERE in the process.

Just look at the Book of Mormon, pages and pages devoted to describing bloody battles where thousands died. Look at the heros of the BoM, Ammon cuting off arms, Moroni marching his stripling warriors. I can't think of much in the BoM that condems war. In fact it portrays war as a battle between righteousness and evil. It plays right into the mindset of the current war.

Has anyone seen the DVD the church put out last year:

Let Not Your Heart Be Troubled
A Message of Peace for Latter-day Saints in Military Service

In it Elder Wickman says. “Mormon and Moroni saw and participated in a carnage so widespread and terrible that the experiences you and I have had pale in comparison. . . . They were soldiers because they had to be, because their people needed them, because it was the right thing to do. Is not that also the case with you, my beloved friends?”

“Do not despair because there are some who question the rightness of the cause in which you are enlisted to fight and for which you may sacrifice so much,” he says. “The Lord will find a way eventually to turn the course of political events to his purposes.”

So have Superman, Batman and Wolverine.

BTW what "carnage" has Elder Wickman seen and participated in? Until he or any of these other "spiritual" leaders have experienced real front line combat they should STFU.

I hadn't seen this dvd, thanks Nate for sharing.

And TSCC says they are neutral, and not in favor of war, any war? The above quote says it all. They truly believe this war in Iraq is God's war.

Yet, when I have explained to tbms that GBH was saying this same thing in his "War and Peace" GC talk, they all say "no way! GBH is not in favor of this war at all!" But In this church-published dvd talk, Elder Wickman, with his obvious support for the war and the soldiers' choice to participate in it, is just echoing GBH.

"They were soldiers because they had to be, because their people needed them, because it was the right thing to do. Is not that also the case with you, my beloved friends?”"

They had to be? Because it is right? How is the Nephite war, a war of self-defense, the same as the invasion of Iraq, a war of pure aggression? Today's soldiers are volunteers, they elect to fight in USA's elective invasions. How is the Nephite War the same as the aggression against the people of Iraq? This is the same parallel GBH drew (by obvious inference) in "War and Peace"-the Iraq invasion is the same as the righteous Nephite War. And the good saints lap it up.

oh, you gotta watch it man! That's just a little excerpt. They film most of it in what looks like a USAF bunker or museum, choose Wickerman and others due to their previous military service, show tons of footage and photo montages from WWII with a blatant attempt to compare the Iraq invasion with WWII...over and over again, and includes stuff from GBH.

If I can figure out how to get this dang DVD burner to work, I could burn you a copy (or make my brother do it). PM me if interested.
