Our own flotsam and peter_mary will be appearing live and in person at the Logan Borders bookstore (1050 N Main St) on Thursday, November 30th from 6 - 8pm. You may or may not already know that they are contributors to a new book: The Mormon Tabernacle Enquirer: Latter-Day News, Advice, and Opinion.

There was an article about the book on the front page of the Sunday Logan newspaper. Anyway, come on out and give them your support. Plus, it will be fun to meet each other in person, having enjoyed friendships online!

See you there!

And here are a couple of reviews:

Editorial Reviews
From Publishers Weekly
If a mature religion is one that can laugh at itself, then Mormonism is growing up. The ranks of the heretofore slim world of LDS satirists (dominated by cartoonists Pat Bagley and Calvin Grondahl and columnist Robert Kirby) have been swelled by the next generation: this compilation of ruthlessly funny articles is as irreverent as the Mormon Tabernacle Choir is decorous. The book is edited by Bigelow, coauthor of Mormonism for Dummies and cofounder of the Sugar Beet (an LDS version of the satirical publication the Onion). Bigelow and his staff of Sugar Beet writers, whose identities are hidden behind ultra-Mormon pseudonyms, ferret out the delicious humor tucked away in Mormonism's quirkiest doctrines and cultural extremes in articles like "Gay polygamists make bid for legitimacy"; "Zions Bank offers financing for scrapbookers"; and "Elvis Presley accepts posthumous baptism." The humor grows mostly out of the rich soil of Wasatch Front culture, so some of it may go over the heads of converts to the faith, and many stalwart Mormons would declare the writing dangerously "light-minded." But a solid core of LDS (and LDS-raised) readers will find The Enquirer a tie-loosening, glue-gun melting pleasure—and an excellent Christmas gift for friends and family. (Nov. 6)

Anybody have a web cam or digital video cam or something that could be set up at the reading? Perhaps post the file here so that those of us who cannot make the trek west could still see/hear the reading?

Anybody?

Bueller?

Bueller?

What--are you serious? You won't come all the way across the frozen tundra that is currently "our neck of the woods" for a two hour book signing? What is it, a mere 1800 miles or so? I just don't understand...

Oh yeah, I never went to Primary. My parents converted when I was 8 or 9, but I didn't live with them until I was YW age. This is probably why my conversion never really sunk in: they didn't get a chance to really brainwash me while my little synapses were still connecting. Trying to brainwash teenagers can be like trying to teach a pig to sing: it only frustrates you and annoys the pig.

The Cache Valley Postmormons played host to flotsam and jetsam...er...I mean flotsam and Peter_Mary :o last night in Logan, and made it a positively wonderful evening! Mamajama wins "hostess of the Year" for opening her lovely home, cooking dinner, buying FIVE books, and being exceedingly cool. Dogzilla, you would have definately appreciated her pico de gallo and her Dear Valley chille...very fresh, very yummy...

After dinner, everyone wandered into the Borders bookstore and turned the evening into a fabulous success. In addition to the ever-darling mamajama, we also got to hang out with Jeff, Mr. and Mrs. Hotrod, Megawatts, Utater and several new friends from the Cache Valley Postmo support group. Because of all of you, it was not only FUN for flotsam and me, but it was also a VERY successful book signing event for Borders! I spoke with them just before I left, and they talked about how great it was from their perspective, too.

So a big thanks to everyone who came out on that blustery night, and special hugs and kisses to mamajama for being such a great party chairperson!

Mrs. Hotrod and I had a wonderful time at Mamajama's last night. Then on to Borders for more fun. I stayed up most of the night reading and laughing as I poked through my newly signed copy of "The Mormon Tabernacle Enquirer." Mormon humor has hit a new high!

Actually, there was no "reading..." We did that at the launch party at Sam Wellers Books in downtown Salt Lake two weeks ago. The one at Borders last night was merely a book signing.

But if you'll get your crystal out, and put your hands on it, and think of me in Idaho, I'll recite some of my best pieces in my mind and you should get a sense for how it went. But if your loins start tingling, you're thinking of something else...

I had a wonderful time too at mamajama's! Thanks so much for hosting the dinner.

Got my signed copy of the book too, and I love it! Congratulations to all who brought it to print!

Sorry that no one thought to take photos...but then again we'd have to put blur out most everyone's faces to preserve their anonymity. (America, the land where freedom reigns...except in Utah)

Actually, I had the most fun of everybody. Truly, I did. This just goes to show that we need to follow through with what one of the wonderful postmos at my house last night suggested: a Postmo cruise! How 'bout Alaska? I think that peter_mary agreed to organize it. You DID agree to organize this event, right peter_mary? ;)

And isn't it ironic that we shunned the church in which we were commanded to keep secret those "sacred" ceremonies and hand jives, only to once again feel that we need to keep secrets. This time, our identities?! Wow.

Next time I take a cruise, I'll let everyone know that they are free to sign up for the same cruise...piece 'o cake!

Interestingly enough, the ONLY time I've ever been on a cruise, it was to Alaska, and flotsam picked us up at the airport in Anchorage and kept us company for the 12 hours until our flight home. Ah...good times, my friends...good times!

I've been busy with house guests. I too had a wonderful time
at Mamajama's place. Delicious food and great company not to mention her very beautiful home. I vote for more get-togethers like this more often. If you guys are serious about cruising, I'll start shopping for some deals and see what we can come up with.

I've only been on one cruise and it was rather awful. The reason being because a local travel agent from our small town was getting together a group to go on this cruise which we happened to sign up for. It ended up being DH and I thrown in with a bunch of people from our little town who were all somehow related to each other, TBMs to boot. We felt like we had crashed someones family reunion. I got grilled at dinner on 'formal' night as to whether or not I could wear my garments with the dress I had on. Unbelievable! On Sunday this group bragged at dinner about how they had gone down into the basement of the ship and held a testimony and sacrament meeting and how spiritual it was. We were true believers at the time but we were never this far gone. Anyway, I need to go on another cruise and make some new memories and have some fun this time. Oh, and it would be nice if I had somebody to dance with too.

Alaska would be awesome. I've also always wanted to do one of the Galapagos Islands tours. And I wouldn't mind doing one of those volunteer vacations as well. Wonder if we'd have enough interested in any one of these?

Sounds great mamjama. I also felt so cheated on that cruise from not being able to imbibe (sp?) just a little bit to help us loosen up some and not feel so uptight. But NoooOOO! I had that big old mormon rain cloud hovering over my head everywhere I went reminding me 'who I was and where I came from' and you never knew who might be watching you and what kind of influence you would have on them. What a bunch of crap.

I'm thinking we should sign up for one of the "Lands of the Book of Mormon" tours in Mexico, and show up drunk off our asses...

"Hey, you...Mr. ture guy...show me *hic* where the ancient baptismal font is...I think I'm gonna hurl..." :Puking

While peter_mary is hurling in the baptismal font, we can all be singing: If You Could Hie (hurl?) to Kolob. I hear the music is from a Scottish drinking song.

That would be the Limited Geography Tour, would it?

That's not a bad idea. I wonder how they would handle a whole group of post-mos within the rest of the tour group of true believers with all of us coming prepared with pointed questions that they obviously wouldn't be able to answer (at least intelligently) and giving them a few facts along the way.

Could be very interesting. After we finished with them they'd probably start asking people to show them their temple recommends before they would be accepted to take their tours in the future. HA!

Mamma that is too funny. Reminds me of Wayne proclaiming to Garth, " If you hurl and she bolts it was never meant to be".

Party on Wayne! Party on Garth!

That's actually an interesting question.... where DO those BoM tours go??

As for how the Plates got to New York, that's easy. Haven't you ever seen "Bewitched"? Samantha could have done it with one little twinkle-twinkle-twink of her nose. You gotta figure God's magic is way more powerful than that of a TV witch.
Oh yeah, and while he was at it, God also removed any evidence of the Nephite civilizations, including steel and horses, etc, etc, etc. Twinkle-twinkle-twink!
