I read today that all Missionaries in the tsunami affected areas have been accounted for. And while I'm grateful for that fact, I can't help but wonder what faith-promoting mythologies will be spun from this event?

On the other hand, I cannot help but feel a profound sense of sorrow for the tens of thousands of parents, and hundreds of thousands of families who have lost loved ones and children in this tragedy. I don't know about the rest of you, but I remember after 9/11 watching people from all around the world express their concern and solidarity with the American people, and being so impressed with that global compassion. I can not see the images now of the tragedy in Asia and not feel that same sense of powerful compassion for these people in their hour of suffering.

I am so glad to be rid of the mindset that attributes these kinds of tragedies to a punishing God, and instead can simply view it as the ebb and flow of the world in motion...the earth interacting with it's most ubiquitous mammal.

My heart aches for the empty arms around the world tonight...

It is a very unhappy event. Reminds one of how delicate life is. We are very hardend as people, thinking little of wars and the damage of people. Then a natural event happens, and reminds us how little power mankind really has.

The Missionaries were more than likely were not at the beaches, and live further inland. Might be something to think about, and they are young and I bet can run pretty fast. I would not go too far with this event.

What church people say weights little with me. I expereinced to many of their lies, and damage, ever to hold much stock in that. Truth, you expect them to tell the truth......no way!

I agree with you a very sad event to happen anytime of the year.

I found it interesting that GBH was justifying the expense of lavish buildings on Larry King Live at about the same time these unfortunate peoples had to experience such a horrific disaster. I am sure the LDS church will send a few million in aid... perhaps nearly as much as they spent here in Pocatello on just one Institute building. I was TBM when the church built the 4.5 million dollar insitute building here at Idaho State University, and even then I realized the wrongness of importing Italian marble for the facade while so many people around the world are going to bed hungry each night and worse. While I recognize that the LDS church does much in the way of humanitarian aid, just think how much more could be accomplished if lavish buildings were not such a high priority.

It is my hope that the victims of this will be able to find some peace and solace.

It is always a thought we have for people facing hardship to find peace and solace, but in the end they have to face hardships now and later in rebuilding shattered lives.

The church.... well.... The Church... they destroy enough lives without natural events happening. Justify abuse, better not get started on the subject.....

And you are right they do not need Italian marble... too much money. Maybe the parents who gave the money could have better used it to cloth and educate their children also.

I, too, feel great sorrow for the victims and their families. It is much easier for me these days to attach scientific reasoning to such disasters rather than blame it on an angry God. Even if there is a God (and I still have not yet come to any personal conclusion regarding this) no way, NO WAY can I believe such events are a result of his anger or as a punishment. The reasoning of nature is real and tangible.

I am also sickened about the luxury the church bastes in within temples, schools, etc. Ridiculous to see hard earned tithe money go to such waste. I've known and I am sure many of you have known many families who have suffered and sacraficed just to pay tithing. Their kids going without, never experiencing even a very small luxury. I am willing to sacrafice much for victims of tragedies but nothing for freakin' marble and crystal in the name of Joe Smith. Too bad we can't all get our money back.
