Hello,

I was wondering if there are any Seattle area Post-Mormons on this site? My location is Lynnwood.

Wes,

We have a support group set up in Seattle but they're active at the moment. The group leader works for a major software corporation (take a guess – yep, that one) and has been quite busy lately but she want's to get the group going again. To find her contact information click on the Support Groups tab near the top of this page directly under the Magazine tab. There'll you see a list that is expanding but hasn't been updated yet. Click on the Seattle link and you'll see her contact information. If you don’t hear from her in a few days come back to this forum and send me a private message or send and email to email@postmormon.com

Glad you found us! I like your idea and would like to keep in touch.

Jeff

Hi Wes,
I live in West Seattle. Left the church shortly after my mission (1983). A long time ago, thankfully--fully recovered for many years now.
I don't know any post-mormons or even tbm mormons in the area except for for numerous TBM family members (and 2 apostate siblings). My association with the TBM side (and disappointment with the cult's influence on them) is what keeps me interested in the subject of Mormonism. I was glad to see this site come into being; I think it's got a good vibe.
BTW I saw your other post about Simon S's lecture at ECC and I'm going to try to make it--perhaps I'll make your acquaintance then!

Hey David,

Thanks for your reply. There's going to be several post-mormons at the lecture (I have not yet met any of them because we only recently moved here) and it should be a great time.

I too have both TBM and apostate family here in the Northwest (Portland, Oregon were I grew up). My Dad has been TBM for most of his life and did his mission to England. His brother is a Portland Bishop with 4 TBM kids. I also have two apostate younger brothers who have nothing to do with Mormonism but still haven't removed their names.

With regard to your post about the three patterns of leaving, I definitely fall into the first one. Everything in your description fits with my story except this part:
when someone has left the church and later returns, this is often the pattern that occured.

After my period of apathy and rebellion I became pretty depressed and started searching for meaning. The only reason I chose to take another look at Mormonism was because my parents met in the church and they were the people I traced my existence from. I was already extremely skeptical of many things within Mormonism not to mention just bored to death with it. Once I started researching church history at the public library, not only were my doubts confirmed, but I learned things that completely blew my mind. I always knew the church was weird and that there was something just not right about it but I had no idea the level of evil, greed, manipulation, and cruelty that made up its history. I was shocked to learn that Joseph Smith and Brigham Young were perhaps the most unrighteous men to have lived since Christ rather than the opposite.

I think many who fit this first pattern just go back to the church without ever really looking into it but I'm very glad I did!

Anyway, looking forward to meeting you at the lecture!

Wes
