View Full Version : Why is there no mormon "first lady"?

You know, the whole "first lady" phenomenon - the supportive wife role - is a pre-feminist, conservative model, but at least it recognizes that powerful men do have spouses, and that those spouses end up contributing to the leadership as well.

But if I think about general conference or church magazines, or pre-packaged "lessons", I don't recall much mention of the President's wife. Why is this? In fact, I don't even know the names of these women.

Is it because of some polygamy legacy?

Is it because Jesus wasn't married, so the model is more of a lone leader?

Isn't it really strange, given the vague "mother in heaven" theology? Or maybe not - the "prophet's" wife gets about the same level of attention, come to think of it.

Why is there no mormon "first lady"?

Because she doesn't have the right kind of anatomy, silly. Don't you know you have to have the priesthood to get such attention?

Other than books that have been written about wives of church leaders there really isn't much attention given them.

Just think what they have to put up with.

Actually James Talmage in "Jesus The Christ" , asserts that Jesus was married, and a polygamist. Martha and Mary!! How bout that?

I do not undersatnd how intelligent, and thoughful women can allow themselves to be treated as second class citizens. I just dont get it!!

Seriously?! Wow - and I thought The Da Vinci code was revolutionary!

You said it! The conditioning is awfully effective, isn't it? I mean, "first lady" is already a second-class sort of role - but what we're looking at here is what-- 3rd class?

Sheesh! I mean, what about all of the couplehood pressure? And then the "first couplehood" is sort of ignored?

(so I posted responses after the quote pieces and somehow, it all ended up withing the quote text. I'm so out of how this works! Sorry)
