Is it or is it not true that Gordon Packer once said, and I paraphrase, " that which is true, is not always helpful"

Now, if he did, contrast that with this from Patrick Henry of, " give me liberty or give me death" fame.

" For my part, whatever anguish of spirit it may cost, I am willing to know the whole truth_ to know the worst and provide for it". Patrick Henry.

I have two questions for you Gordo!!

1. If I know you parse the truth, how will I know when you are telling the truth, or lying? (Isn't witholding information a form of dishonesty?)

2. Who gave you the right to decide what is and isn't helpful to me?

Tell me the truth!! Let the consequence follow!!!

Indeed, Boyd K. Packer made the following statement in one of his most infamous addresses:

"There is a temptation for the writer or the teacher Of Church history to want to tell everything, whether it is worthy or faith promoting or not.
Some things that are true are not very useful."

It can be found in a talk entitled "The Mantle is Far, Far Greater than the Intellect," which you can access here:

http://www.xmission.com/~country/reason/mantle.htm

The very title of the talk is the epitome of audacious, considering he would claim the benefit of the mantle, if not the intellect.

for the clarification!! I read that address. Wow, something else eh?

I have one more question though.

1. Under what circumstance would it be proper, or usefull, for a man at 39 years of age, to marry a 14 year old girl?

Perhaps this would fit into the the " advanced church history arena".

There should be a button to click on the bottom of the original post, the one you started the thread with that says "edit". Click that and make your changes then at the bottom click "save changes". (I think it says saves changes, it may say "submit changes"). Don't feel dumb!

You ask such a good question.
"2. Who gave you the right to decide what is and isn't helpful to me?"

It pisses people off (especially my TBM students) when I tell them that BYU has no right to call itself a University. The whole concept of a university is to shrink the "universe" down to one campus and hand it to the students. This is why academic freedom is so important. It is also why my wife had a teacher years ago at Weber State Univ. (where I teach) who was a devil worshiper. (at the time, we were appalled) Anyway, now I ask my students the same question you ask. Who has the right, when handing students the universe, to carve out hunks of it and say to them "You can't handle this part, so we will spare you the agony of the truth." What arogance and unaduterated bullshit. So, when my faculty collegues ask me what BYU should be called (they, by this time, know I used to teach at BYU) I tell them
"The Brigham Young Center for Moral Inbreeding" (I don't tell the students this--maybe a touch too inflammatory.)

I think the editing can only take place about the time you make the post. So just for the record!! :) I do know it is Boyd K. Packer!! ;) But I do still feel a bit silly!! Thanks for the help and advice. If anyone can edit that for me I would appreciate it. If i'm goin to outer darkness, I at least dont want to go looking like I was ill informed. Now where is my flashlight?
