Over on the Fair Boards there is a really really good thread on apostolic succession. Quite a few Catholics post on the board and they are really holding their own.

Anyone else been following it and have any thoughts???

Do you have a link to the discussion? I don't visit the board at all but this sounds interesting and I'd like to check it out.

Apologies Silverfox. I should have put in the link. Hold on will check it out now.

Interesting Web Site for non LDS+LDS, When/Where did your Church Start ?

The first is, hopefully, the link. The 2nd is the title of the thread, just incase it doesn't work.

The discussion really starts to develop, when a poster called Ave Maria, starts to question Kerry Shirts (T shirt) arguments over an apostacy. It is something that I always took for granted when I was in the church.

Jesus organised a church, continued by the apostles, who were all killed off, and thus the great apostacy began.

The catholics on the thread, are arguing that the succession continued through the bishops, and so 'authority' (if it is indeed needed anyway) continues through them.

The thread made me think anew about a lot of issues in the church, on their claims to authority and on the issue of an apostacy in general.

It's one of the best threads that I have read on there so far. And one enlightened LDS member, is arguing that LDS succession suffered similar problems to the early church.

It isn't finished yet. Will be interesting to see where it leads.

It is an interesting discussion. But what I always found interesting was the mention in the new testament of the apostacy itself. It is the part where it is understood that people will be forbidden to marry and encouraged not to eat meat. This pretty much discribes the Catholic Church. In the past it was a sin for catholics to eat meat on Friday and of course priests are forbidden to marry. Something happened after the apostles died off. After all, it is quite usual for Catholics to believe that saints are special people who performed miracles and good works and not the members of the church as stated in the new testament. Plus, the priestly robes and crowns on the head would signify some sort of apostacy. And I think that this is the point. The church began to separate those in authority from the people by showing special dress and monarchical authority, thereby separating the 'authority' from everyday life. But what is more interesting about the Fair thread is the lively discussion that LDS people are having. If they could only feel free to discuss these matters in church, it would be a much more lively place to be... :)

I always enjoyed the aroma in the Catholic Church from the incense that the priest uses during the ceremony....

That insense stuff always makes me cough like crazy!!! No disrespect intended!!!

For me, the question of authority was always a bit of a moot point, even when I was active.

I think somewhere in the NT there is a story of a couple of blokes who are baptising in Jesus's name without his authority. The disciples get really ticked off about this, and he answers something along the lines of, ...forbid them not, for he that is not against me, is with me.... Something like that...

That one bit there argues to me that all the talk of authority is a bit moot anyway!!!

Having said that it is great to see such lively and good mannered discussion going on over on the fair boards!!!

(I too, wish that we could have discussed like that in Sunday School!!!!)
