This morning as we were getting ready to head out the door my daughter mentioned in our conversation an incident that had me almost rolling on the floor. She said that when she was visiting a friend on a Sunday last Summer they were hanging out in the family camp trailer where just across the street is a Mormon Church. The parking lot was full with some cars even on the street as we know is usually the case in Utah when church is in session. As my daughter and friend were taking it easy they heard the closing song for sacrament meeting and when the song was over it wasn’t 30 seconds and car doors were opening and closing, which went on for about five minutes. Then silence. They got up to take a look and the parking lot was empty! That to me is a testimony of what Mormons really think of the true church. Truly boring!

Does anyone have similar testimonies they would like to share?

I would like to bear my testimony, that I know Fast Sunday sucks!

As a child, I always hated Fast Sunday, and not just for the obvious reasons. When I was forced to go 24 hours without eating, I would get physically ill. I remember many times getting dizzy, confused, disoriented, fainting, and even vomiting occassionally. At first, I tried to tell my parents about this, but I was told that I was either making it up, or that it was a trick of the devil, to try to get me to cave in and eat. After being told this a few times, I just quite telling them about it, and resigned myself to it.

Recently, I had similar symptoms while shopping with my wife (after skipping breakfast), and she made me tell a doctor about this. Turns out I have Reactive Hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar levels; formerly known as Satan.

Just goes to show how faith can blind you, even to the extent that you put your own children in unnecessary danger. Amen.

Even in the most TBMy of my TBM days I hated it. Several times I left the meeting when the Kiddy Parade started. In Florida we had many parents who walked their kids to the microphone and whispered in their ears what to say. I felt insulted by such a blatant tactic to indoctrinate. Any thinking person that could long endure, let alone encourage that, was not worthy of my respect.

If I recall correctly now in fast meetings they ask that parents not allow the little ones to bear their testimonies...is this true? There was speculation that it was to quiet the rumors that members were brainwashing the little ones (ages 2,3,4, etc, the real little ones)

In the name of cheese and rice, amen

For many years the Church did have the children bear their testimony, and yes the parents would whisper in their ear what to say. Just depends how old one is, so guess who is showing their age!!! It kind of like when they look Joseph Smith's pictures down and hung up Christs to look more Christian.

Mind control methods. Mind control defined and can be found in Hassan's books, is thought refomation, with little physical abuse, and the use of people being deceived and manipulated, in brain washing 'coercive' tacts are used.

In fact the fuction of testimony meeting is for mind control methods, of restating and re-enforcing the groups belief.

Got a chuckle too out of some of the posts. Sorry some suffered all in the name of the "Devil". I bet it made your wife feel better too that the fainting spell wasn't because you disliked 'shopping' as much a 'fast and testimony meeting"!

Hope you feeling better now and things are under control.

The only thing I have to say is, I take back everything I ever said in Testimony meeting, except for the last testimony I gave several years ago, when I said I thought the people in the area were evil! I stick by that one!!

This is sort of along the same line (coercion), and sometimes, it seems that R. Kirby says it best...

Nate,

Recently, I had similar symptoms while shopping with my wife (after skipping breakfast), and she made me tell a doctor about this. Turns out I have Reactive Hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar levels; formerly known as Satan.

I had the same thing happen to me on several occasions. One memorable occasion was when the family had been invited to dinner Fast Sunday night at the home of the Temple President and his wife at Templeview in New Zealand. I had been starving all day, but as meal time approached I was barfing!

Thanks for illuminating another corner of my Mormon experience.

It must be about 7 years ago now that some scientists discovered that if a magnetic field was brought into close proximity with a certain part of the brain (left frontal lobe by memory) of blindfolded people, some reported feeling like they were in the presence of some form of Divine personage.

It created a stir, because just as the last stages of consciousness prior to blackout on one of those G generators they use with pilots, produces experiences similar to a near-death experience, so the presence of a magnet could replicate a 'spiritual' experience. This brought into severe doubt the reality on anything other than the subjective level, what some people reported.

It also created plenty of fodder for comedians, to play with the question of whether men would have any more success locating the brains G spot, than the erotic one.

I have never located a good source of on-line information on that research, so if anyone has some, please let me know.

Daryl

PS: Please do not interpret the above as meaning that I believe that all near-death phenomena have been explained adequately.
