I read in the local paper this evening that the CIA is thrilled with it's latest recruiting trip to BYU-Idaho. Seems that returned Mormon missionaries at "Ydaho" are "ideally suited" to work in the CIA...they speak foreign languages, they are fiercely patriotic, and they generally sail through the drug screenings and background checks.

But does this cause anyone else to tremble? How excited are YOU about the Mormons becoming one of the key components of the CIA?

Do you remember who trained Al Qaeda? Yup...the CIA. They taught 'em everything they know in Afghanistan, fighting the Soviets. Now look where that's gotten us. Do we need another brand of zealots with the same kind of intelligence-gathering/utilizing capabilities, right here on home soil?

No, I'm not naive enough to believe the Mormons are equivalent to the Mujahedeen, but still...what happens when you get enough highly place, highly trained, highly informed Mormons in the country? At what point does it become alarming? Is THIS the real meaning of that stupid "boiling frog" metaphor? Little by little, the Church infiltrates the highest levels of government, until one day, we look around and Mit Romney is President, and the Orrin Hatch is Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. And the CIA teaches the "Stengthening the Members Committee" a new trick or two...

Scary. Must be a sign of the times... ;)

Otherwise, all quite here in Outer Darknes...

I've heard the same thing about the FBI - love to recruit RMs for the language, clean records, "honesty," etc.

Moism would be an ideal training for CIA mentality. The organisations track record of backing any scum-bag as long as they made anti-commo noises and furthered US short term agendas, is legend.

Peter_Mary, you overlook subservience to power freaks; that other great Mo attribute that would probably make a great cog in the CIA machine.

Of course their silo mentality would guarantee we would see more of the failure to co-operate with the FBI that helped enable 911.

Oh, your country is in great hands. :duh Give me someone who has smoked a few joints, told a few fibs, and got a few parking tickets any day!

PS: I wonder how the CIA filter out closet-gays, with their increased security risk. There would have to be a problem with well scrubbed young Mo ex Mishs. Their denial of their own nature would be the crazy and risky bit, not the gayness in itself. (Hey where does the CIA stand on gays these days? Are they still back in the 50s - ah the good old days with the closet gay/transvetite J E Hoover at the tiller!)

Of course it would make sense. TBMs are loyal citizens by and large. Not all cia people are involved in dirty work. But still it would make sense for good and loyal members to find a place there. I am not a fan of the CIA and hopefully, those members who join such work situations can critically reflect when and if they are called upon to do a dirty act. But the church does put stress on obeying your country's leaders and being loyal to the flag etc. They will fit in quite well....

The CIA has a problem in that they stress loyalty and obedience as #1 and intelligence and scientific thinking as # 999 on the list of priorities. (A little hyperbole)

The CIA uses lie detectors as their primary means of weeding out undesirables. Lie detectors that are proven to be unscientific tend to weed out only the honest. Mormons, who are trained to lie, but to feel good about it so long as it is for the cause, have a natural advantage here. (To be fair many Morms have less baggage to worry about, and that does help reduce stress levels in the test.)

If I were running the US government I would want Mormons in the infantry, marines, etc, but I would be leery of putting them in charge of intelligence gathering and analysis. Then again maybe they can use the "spirit" to figure out where Osama Bin Laden is hiding. (He’s probably at Boyd K Pakers house.) I am sure many Morms are OK at their jobs, but I would really want a good skeptic reviewing things and not a Christian Taliban of any stripe.

Speaking of Orrin Hatch, he just did a very telling thing...or didn't do, rather.

The US Senate has passed a formal apology for blocking anti-lynching legislation for decades. The legislation that was repeatedly blocked by the Senate, even after being passed by the House and supported by numerous Presidents, was to make hate crime lynchings (which resulted in almost 5000 deaths) a federal crime because state law enforcement was often complicit in the murders.

It is good that the Senate has acknowledged their error and apologized. The apology passed, but there were still some Senators that refused to sign the formal apology. On that list are both Utah Senators, Hatch and Bennett.

Are you thinking modern day Dannites? The BoM does have a lot of statements about needing to follow Christ in order to remain in the Promised Land. Could they use these verses to rally a group of fanatical members to establish a theological state where no other views are tolerated? I suppose that is what you have at Colorado City or some of the other fundamentalist groups.

I personally hope this country never become that religiously radicalized but the statements of the Religious Right and various Republicans and even high ranking generals in the US military make me wonder sometimes if they aren't raging a religious war. Could the current culture wars escalate to actual civil war and opression of non christians? I hope not.
