I have not been an active mormon for more than 14 years. I would really like to have my name removed from any offical records of the church. I know I need to submit a letter, but I do not know exactly what it neds to say. If anyone has any suggestions, websites ect. I would appreciate the help.

Thanks Helemon for the web site connection.

I too am in the process of name removal. I used the info from the site above. I think it will be helpful to you. Also, Silverfox here has recently been through the process. I am sure she would no mind offering advice.

Again Welcome!!

Go to the link helemon has provided. Be sure to read through ALL the steps and follow each one. I am sure you will have to contact them after you send your letter. They seem to like to sit on them for a while. I had to call twice to finally get my formal letter from them stating I was no longer a member. It took me 3 months.

Best wishes.

Name removal is possible but don't think that
Mormon Inc. will let you go so easily. :slap:
Once a mo aways a mo.

Best of luck

I disagree with "once a mo always a mo". With each passing day I find myself further and further away from the church's reach. It's wonderful!

I couldn't agree more with what you have said concerning the liberation you feel upon leaving the church. I left Mormon Inc. 3 years ago I feel great. What I meant in the statement "once a mo always a mo" was that the church will never never let you go. You may think your names are removed and on the surface it may appear that way but believe me your names are still in their records. I was just trying to point out that it is not worth the hassle.

jamerica,

In the above you seem to assume that if the Church keeps ones name in its files, then the request for name removal is pointless.

I would argue that there are other perspectives on the process, which you may not have considered.

The first and most obvious is that even if they keep your name on file, it will then have you as an 'ex', which carries some substantial satisfaction in itself. It is a spit in the eye!

But on the more valuable level, in the leavers mind, they have shut a door, and shut it firmly. And it was the front door they exited by, rather than weasling out the back door or a window. They (Mo) want to make a fanfare when you come in the front door, so don't let them off by leaving by the back door without making a fuss.

I have argued elsewhere that a bunch of LeavingMos should run an advertsisment that they will hold a public hearing in which they try the Church for its membership of credible human institutions along teh lines of fair trading/misleading advertising. Evidence should then be tabled of its protracted willfull misrepresentation of its history etc, and at the end, excommunicated.

If you break their rules, they will place you before a disciplinary court in person or in-absentia, so why not place them on trial for what they covered up and actively concealed in the discussions.

So, I am all in favour of not going out with a wimper. Stick it to the lying bastards! Give'em some of their own medicine. (Of course you would do it out of luuuuuurve!)

I don't doubt the church still counts ex mo's, former mo's post mos - whatever we are. Whenever I read that the LDS church is the "fastest growing church with 12 billion members" I want to LAUGH MY ASS OFF OUT LOUD. Because those numbers are so DAMNED bogus.

The church is pathetic enough to continue to count exmembers, inactives, babies, dead members, etc, etc, etc. Afterall they ARE a corporation and they need and thrive on numbers.

Regardless, I find great satisfaction in knowing I have formally had my name removed. I am sure my name is still on record but I am also sure there are little check marks by it. It will be known at some time to some one some where that lil' ol' silverfox no longer wanted to be a member.

I had to make contact with SLC today to follow up so as to recieve the formal letter. I was dreading the call. I want you to know that I have had a sense of peace all afternoon since I made the call. The closure is important for me. I frankly am stunned at the level of peace of mind that has come from this simple logistic act.

Jamerica dont think we are pouncing on you. We are just giving our thoughts and feelings. We are glad you voiced your opinion. Fire away if you have something to say!!

Thank you every one for the great information. I have written my letter and sent it off certified with delivery confirmation today. I stumbled across this website accidently, but let me tell you how excited I am to know that there are other people out there that can relate to exactly what I think and feel about the church. Thanks again. :) :)

My bishop(s) kept losing my resignation letters. Finally, I made the bishop sign a form saying he did receive the letter. I kept a copy of that form, in case he lost it again, I could sue. He remembered then.

When the dolts in the cult refuse to grant your wish to have your name removed (and you'll know this when month after month goes by with no confirmation letter signed by "Greg Dodge", you drop me a line and I'll help you get it done.

Trust me.

Good luck, 'cause I think you're gonna need it. I first resigned back in the fall of '98. It was not until Feb. of '02 that it was honored. And even I didn't care for the methods I had to take in order to get it honored. But when I got it, I got it. Though the morg kept trying and trying to get me to return.
