I recently ran into a site online that was new to me. Please go to www.reformmormanism.org and check out the various parts of the site. The site indicates that if you agree with some of the ideas posted on this site that you may want to call yourself a "reformed morman". How many of you who read and post on this site (postmormon.com) agree with most of what is posted on this reformed morman site and if not, what are the areas that you disagree with? I am just interested in getting some feed back from post mormons on the ideas expressed via this site. The site seems to have only about 70 members and appears to not be frequented by many but the ideas expressed seem quite novel. What do you think? Stewart

Stewart,
You have a spelling error in mormanism instead of mormonism, the address being www.reformmormonism.org.

It does look interesting, but my first response was 'If you are for that liberal, progressive agenda, why would you use Mormonism as the launch platform, given how badly flawed any student of it, knows it to be?'

Yeah, this site was advertised in Sunstone for a few months so I checked it out. I thought it could be interesting, but I was waaaay turned off by the way the guy wrote like a General Authority. "I would now write to those who have been driven from Mormonism by prejudice and racism." Nice message, no style.

That's just me. I like style.

I"m just going off memory here, but I also remember thinking that the rhetoric of the whole thing took exactly the same stance as mainstream Mormonism. "Too bad for those poor deluded Joes in the mainstream church. If only they were as enlightened as we are."

I hate that attitude. It means you've decided to stop learning.

But I'd be interested if you'd point out a few of the parts you thought were interesting. Maybe I'm not giving it a fair shake.

It seemed a little weird. I am not sure about the Book of Michael thing. It seems like the guy wants to start his own church with its own set of 'reformed' beliefs. I think that I will stay here on this site! We are crazy but not that crazy!

I was wondering when this would come. I have been expecting it for years. It seemed a natural thing for someone to piggyback on the good things in moism and change the others.

For me, like those who have already answered this thread, there is no need to go back to any reference to moism to start with. If the group wants no part of the authoritarianism that comes from this line of thought: (the dashes are arrows)

The BOM is true---Joseph wrote the BOM from God---Joseph was a prophet---We should listen and obey a prophet---Gordo is the current prophet---We should listen and obey Gordo.

why tie back to moism at all? I did not read that Book of Michael so I did not see if it reflected a desire to become an authority. So, I don't see the point in being reformed as far as doctrine or anything other than one thing. I see some value in being "Reformed 'Mormon'" because it can be a refuge for those leaving moism. Just like here. Perhaps they would like to be a refuge but also be a more structured organization than we are, don't know. But, if that is the case there will exist the danger of authoritarianism. It kind of makes me think of Orwell's "Animal Farm".

I think it is mostly harmless :D

I aplaud the people who created it just like I aplaud the creators of this site for being willing to stand up and state publicly that they do not agree with the current teachings of the church. I don't get the sense that these people are starting their own church in the normal sense of the word but more creating a community where like minded people can gather and share ideas. I think this group serves a valid purpose. There are many members who don't agree with what is coming out of SLC but they have no where else that seems to fit. Mormonism is their heritage and culture and defines who they are in a profound way. Thus it makes sense that they would want to preserve the good they see and try to change the things they disagree with.

I think it is good that they are not coming across as hostile about church doctrines. They are not trying to prove mormonism is wrong just that they have a different view on various doctrines. The more sites like this grow the more the leaders of the LDS church will be forced to address these issues. Will they maintain the conservative hardline or shift toward more moderate and liberal positions on some of these issues?

Why does this sound so familiar???
Where have I heard this before??
Making up scripture to start your own church??
Hmmmm....... ;)

Anyway, I imagine that if I had found such an organization back when I first left the mormon church, I might have been drawn to it. It might have been a helpful transitional place to be.
I agree pretty much with Helemon's assessment- it serves a purpose.

At least they aren't claiming that their scripture was written on gold plates and delivered to them via an angel. From what I saw they seem to have a more realistic approach to what they are calling "scripture."

I related to a lot of the view points expressed there.
Thought the Book of Michael was a bit wierd but what he/she says was also stuff I could relate to

Thought the Choose the Left ring was pretty funny.

What I didn't like was that I couldn't find a single page that explained who the creator of the site was, what his motives are, and why he/they, feel the way they do.

This may be on purpose, but I like to know who I am dealing with, just a little, if possible.
