I watched Kinsey last week. In the movie Dr. Kinsey's father confesses to have been forced to wear something that sounded similar to this device as a 10 yr old boy. I wonder how widespread such a device was outside of mental institutions. The design looks very familiar!
Good thing the brethern didn't incorporate all the features into the design of the knee length G's.

I just added another site to my "Must visit" list for my next time in New York.

You americans seemed to take this whole sex technology to a new altitude. The combination of entrepreneural & tehnological momentum combined with fundamentalist sexual paranoia sure made for a bizzare combination.

My all time favourite is the steam-powered vibrators to cure hysteria (by inducing orgasms) in women. Can't you hear the clinic dialogue "Oh, Mrs Smith is in at 3 o'clock this afternoon for her regular service. Can you make sure the boiler has a good head of steam up in time?"

I can see a mini video on it as I write, in which the boiler hits maximum pressure and the pressure crack-off valve/whistle goes off right as Mrs Smith does!

Large laugh, out loud, as coffee dribbles out my nose and down my shirt.

Think I will go have a bowl of corn flakes so I can avoid the evils of monkey spanking.

(See why I want to avoid authoritarianism!!)

Does the anti matsurbation suit come in cotton or nylon designs? To be honest, my chain mail anti masturbation suit has worn through and isn't very confortable.

Ed,

I have this ongoing question about how North American culture shifted from this idea that women were not sexual beings, who just happened to suffer from 'hysteria' that was cured either by a hysterectomy or regular trips to the doctor for a mecahnically induced orgasm, to one that, around the turn of the century, started to frown upon that and presumably deny women's sexuality completely, until Kinsey later scandalised the US with his research findings that from grannies and teenage girls were regularly adventuring with the 'little man in the boat'.

Have you ever seen that transition explained by a reliable source?

PS: If a Battery Operated Boyfriend is a Bob, I guess a steam powered one would be a Sob, and before small electric motors and small batteries, I guess they had Mob - Mains operated Boyfriends - not to be confused with Manually operated Boyfriend!

Mains?? Are you refering to horses? Is that why women had to ride side saddle? Makes you wonder about those witches and their broomsticks. ;) I think the use the artificial phallus goes way back into antiquity. I remember reading that some of the craftsman of the early cathedrals even hid some in the altars of the churches. Or maybe the priests did that? :slap: :slap:

I think a few things came together to cause this to happen. At the turn of the century the culture was controlled to a large part by the church. During WWI & WWII men were sent to foreign lands. They experienced cultures where sex wasn't held in the same Puritanical view as in America. The soldiers were given condoms as part of their rations and visiting prostitutes was common among the troops. At the same time women were moving into the workforce and thus had more control over their own lives and developed skills that could allow them to survive without the support of a man. I also read that some of that powerful machines these women were operating also vibrated quite a bit, much to the suprise and enjoyment of some of the operators. This probably gave them new courage to start exploring and demanding their own physical needs.

The scientific advancements of the past century have also allowed society to distance itself from the control of the church toward a more rational approach to life. This is demonstrated by Kinsey's work. But Kinsey's research did not advocate particular sexual behavior it merely shined a light on the behaviors that were already occurring, but were being denied and hidden by the people who at the time were trying to define and enforce what types of sexual behavior were acceptable and moral. I think Kinsey's work helped a lot of people realize that they were not unique in their sexual orientation, desires, or sexual proclivities. In the movie Kinsey criticizes how the sex laws of the time had been used to imprison poor people without the benefit of legal counsel of "crimes" that were being engaged in by people of all levels of society. In the movie he says "The sins of all of us are the sins of none of us."

This exposure to new cultures, and different value systems combined with the advancement of the power of science and reason over the dogma of religion I think helped lead to the exploration of open sexual expression in the late 60's. This led to a rise in feminism as well were women courageously claimed ownership of their lives and their sexuality.

I think the internet has more recently allowed people to explore their sexuality and led to even more widespread acceptance of sex toys and marital aids.

Life in Lubbock, Texas, taught me two things: One is that God loves you and you're going to burn in hell. The other is that sex is the most awful, filthy thing on earth and you should save it for someone you love.- Butch Hancock

Nothing in particular except it is in TX and the bible belt so I suppose the comedian who made the quote was refering to the strong hell fire form of Christianity that is found in the South?

Daryl,

The only good explanations I have ever seen are along the exact lines that Helemon expressed in his above post. What I find interesting is if we extend the arc of growth on into the future and let it instruct us about what the mainstream is holding to now.

I desperately hope this continues!! The rise of evangelical christianity has me concerned, as I am sure they want to reverse some of this!
