I'm too chicken (and probably too old, and too fat...) to wear Dark's T-shirts and look cool in 'em, but I don't think posting his website in any way violates the policy. He's not proselytizing us, he's pointing us to something he thinks some will find amuzing. Frankly, I thought starrynights comments crossed the line a LOT more than Dark's posting the link to his website...but I also have a thick skin and can accept her/his irritation as par for the course.
To quote someone famous..."Whatever."

I can understand starrynight's response. Of course, I know us and darkslider a little and so I was not offended about it. But if a newcomer was observing our boards he or she could be offended about the cross being shown that way. But I don't know where humor and cultural sensitivity cross. It is important to acknowledge that we don't sponsor everything that is posted in the forum and that for the most part, people are free to post a post without the endosement of postmormon.org.

I checked out Darksliders site, and didn't like it much. It goes too far for me, and I didn't find it funny. I can certainly see how some people would find it offensive.
I just checked back as it has changed.
Darkslider aaargh, where is all this hate coming from!!! I think you are going too far here. I certainly don't want to be seen to be endorsing this site.

No offence Darkslider, I am sure you don't mind me not liking it.

I also understand how many could find it offensive. However, half of our opinions that we post here offends someone.
There is a difference between "is this against forum policy" and "is this offensive".
That is what I am trying to get at. Do you feel this is against forum policy? I ask because I think we all have our own interpretation of the policy.

Well, my gut reaction was to vote, yes, it was against forum policy, but my vote was just that, a gut reaction.
I think Starrynight has interpreted that because Darkslider posted his web site on this forum that it automatically becomes the mind of everyone else here.
Surely Starrynight has the sense to understand that this is not necessarily so (there's a song in there somewhere?)

my 2c.....
I'm certain that the web site will offend and is, in fact, intended to offend.
If the content of the web site had been posted here, then yes, it would be against forum policy. But it's not posted here - there's only just a link. I mean, what if someone posts a link to a "non-offensive" site, but that site has a link to an offensive site. Would that be against forum policy? Where do you draw the line? Good grief - our dear moderators have their hands full with us - they can't be expected to police this forum AND the entire internet.
The thread itself does not break with forum policy.
But on a side note, Dark, buddy! you might want to put a little warning. Not because you have to, but just because it's

I am not going to critique Dark's site, but this is how I feel about his post:
The board policy states:
"opinions regarding sensitive issues such as religious preference, sexual orientation, political issues, etc. should always be couched as simply that, personal opinions, rather than as matters of fact."
and Dark posted this:
"You are cordially invited"
I personally don't see how this can be seen as a policy violation.

Do I think it violated policy? No, because it is only a link and one person's viewpoint and opinion not the forum's.
Do I think it is disgusting, and designed to offend and completely unnecessary? Yes
Would I patronize? Absolutely NOT!

Couple of things I wanted to bring out to light.
1. I understand how people can be offended by some of the shirts. Part of this venture is a study in purchasing psychology. Part of this is to illicit response. And part of it is to fill a nitch that I have heard/seen the request for. . . with no solutions.
2. I am not the only person involved in this project. Indeed, my role is one of limited influence. I amount to the marketing manager and publicist. I don't design the shirts. I didn't design the site. I didn't write most of the text. I merely promote the site to various communities.
3. Elder No Mo: As for adding the "warning", I agree. I didn't think about that until after I posted it, and for some reason, I am unable to go back and edit my post or I would. I apologize for lack of warning and to anyone who feels blindsided by it.
4. My two cents regarding a break in forum policy: I thought long and hard about having people visit the site. I contemplated sending information via PM. . . and decided against it. Not only would I view that as a break of policy, it goes against my very nature. I am always vocal and willing to stand apart because of that vocality. I went with a very bland, non-emotionally charged post for that very reason. I don't feel that my posting a link to Art of Desecration is any worse than posting links to FAIR or any other website. However, if I was in the wrong, by all means take down the link.
5. Miss Taken: I value your opinion and have always read your posts with great interest. However, I feel that I must repeat something. I am not the only person involved in this project and my involvement (creatively, textually, whatever) is limited. Were it not for my more conservative view, you might be seeing a few more shirts that would definetly offend everyone. I am the marketing manager and publicist for Art of Desecration. I sometimes get consulted regarding shirt design. No more, no less.
All in all, I don't know why I typed this up. Maybe it was just to let people know what is going on.
I really do respect and love you all. And Peter_Mary. . . chicken! ;)

Absolutely not. Darkslider made no mention of telling other people what they should believe in. Nor did he even imply that his merchandise was for anything other than humorous purposes. Posting a link that might appeal to some and not to others should definitely be allowed. People who are not too sensitive to sacreligion will enjoy the website while those who take it personally won't. That's their decision, not Darksliders. His decision is only to post the opportunity.

I agree with what has been said. I think the site does contain material that would be offensive to mormons. But that is the point of the website. How else are young punks and rebelious teens in UT supposed to piss off their elders? ;)
Was Darks posting the link against policy? No, I think we are all big boys and girls and can make up our own mind. If people are offended by that site they definitely better avoid the latterday lampoon site! That site needs an age warning for some of its content.

You know for me, I don't know which would be more offensive, Dark's link or the FAIR links. *shudders*
Except Dark's made me laugh my arse off.
heh heh
As suggested I will put a warning on the post that contains the link.
Thanks for the feedback, everyone.

I have no problem with a link from a posting here going to wherever. The participants are big children, and can make up their own mind what they do and don't endorse.
If I have a problem, it is more in the area of the promotion of a 'business venture' on this site - the ethics get a bit problematic. That picture is muddied when the content may be endorsed to a lesser or greater degree by some members.

DarylI think the mormon church builds a fence around its people by teaching them that all else outside is evil , this type of web site plays right into there hands and reinforces that point of view , this will not help struggling souls who are fighting for there right to be free and are in a very confused state of mind , i think Darkslider should remove the link and place it in a more radical forum such as LDS Lampoons

Thanks for the clarification Darkslider. Hope you don't take my comments personally. I guess the site was designed to provoke this kind of reaction (which is farely muted I would hazard, compared to what you are all going to get!!!) thanks for your thoughtful reply. (and for being nice to me!!!)

Too bad this thread is about what's against forums rules, not about what "should" be Darkslider's ethical decision.

I do not believe that a consideration of what someone will or will not choose to take offense at would be a beneficial part of wise decision making. Every person (becaue as Daryl said, we are all big children here) can be responsible for their own offense taking. It is none of my business what an adult chooses to be offended at.
That being said, a poll such as this will allow the opinions of us all to be expressed and maybe some may learn from the attitudes inherent in our posts. So, I am glad that Silverfox started this one. If someone is in pain because of the link, the content of Dark's site or Keene's shirts, I sorrow for their pain but invite them to learn by and from that pain. I thought that is why (according to moism) we came to earth. To learn wisdom by the things we suffer. SO LEARN, YA'LL. (don't bitch).

Well, things have changed some since I left a few months back. Oh, BTW, I'm back.
AFAIC if someone doesn't like darkslider's stuff, don't read it! Don't like what he sells, don't buy it! All a matter of personal responsibility.
I think Darkslider is just fine as a person (from what I remember). Not good and not evil.
