Joseph made it abundantly (and apparently convincingly) clear to his family members that they could not look upon the gold plates and live. If this was the case, when the would-be thieves and ruffians came to steal them, rather than hide them beneath the mantle, in a hollow log, or in a barrel of beans, why didn't he just show them the plates and kill them outright? I can't think of anything that would be more convincing for his story...

Just wondering...

Maybe the "plates" didn't amount to a hill of beans!

Hey, this sounds like a good plot line for a new Indiana Jones movie. Maybe the plates could be shown melting people's faces or some such faith building image.

I think, if I am correct, that gold is quite heavy. Seems that Lucy Mack Smith said something to the effect that Joseph ran at full speed with them under his arm, in a bag, for about three miles.

Let's see now. If I am correct, based on the size of the plates as described by smokin Joe, it was what? Six, by six, by seven??

Hmm ok let's see!! You know, based on what I have read, that would have weighed between 150, and 200 lbs.
Man he must have been quite strong to run so fast with that much weight under his arm. Smokin Joe really must have been some kinda guy eh? No wonder he got so many babes!! :)
