Does anyone remember going to the temple and scanning your recommend? I remember scanning it like a credit card before the session then again after going through the veil. I'm not crazy am I. Whatever happened with that and why did that change?

Yep, I had one. I heard the were done away with because of too many technical difficulties that the elderly temple workers didn't know how to fix.

You are not halucinating. I first used that swipe thing in the Provo temple. That would have been in 1985/86. I'm not sure just why it didn't stick; I heard rumors that it was too much like a government bureaucratic thing and they got a lot of critical feedback. Also heard that they had a lot of problems with the equipment and decided to trash the whole system. Might have been a totally different reason. It didn't last very long.

Sorta like, hey Dude, God wouldn't need a bar code reader to establish your worthiness to enter the Temple, so they don't need stuff to look too worldy, too techy. Might distract from the spiritual experience of doing ordinances for recycled list of dead folks!

It'd have connotations of taking a packet of Corn Flakes through the checkout at the supermarket, wouldn't it. Definately wouldn't do for such a Godly process!

From my understanding of the situation, the scanning of recommends was to allow for more accurate tracking of who was attending the temple and how much.

The reason I was told they discontinued use of the scanners was because there were too many problems with the equipment and the elderly folks running it did not have the "know how" to troubleshoot the most simple problems.

But, that is just what I heard. I could be wrong.

Just think if they kept it going. It could have been used like a credit card system. You could go to scan your recommend. Lets say for some reason you were not a full tithe payer or the bishop decided later you were not worthy. They could deny you entrance due to lack of tithing, activity, or word of wisdom credits
