The study by University of Scranton states that coffee is the number one source of antioxidants in American diet, and both caffeinated and decaf versions appear to provide similar antioxidant levels.

"Americans get more of their antioxidants from coffee than any other dietary source. Nothing else comes close," said study's lead researcher Dr. Joe Vinson, adding that high antioxidant levels in foods and beverages don't necessarily translate into levels found in the body.

Antioxidants in general have been linked to a number of potential health benefits, including protection against heart disease and cancer, but Vinson said that their benefits ultimately depend on how they are absorbed and utilized in the body.

The researchers analyzed the antioxidant content of more than 100 different food items, including vegetables, fruits, nuts, spices, oils and common beverages. The data was compared to an existing US Department of Agriculture database on the contribution of each type of food item to the average estimated US per capita consumption.

Besides keeping you alert and awake, coffee has been linked to an increasing number of potential health benefits, including protection against liver and colon cancer, type 2 diabetes, and Parkinson's disease, according to some recently published studies.

"One to two cups a day appear to be beneficial. If you don't like coffee, consider drinking black tea, which is the second most consumed antioxidant source in the U.S. diet," Vinson said.

Take that WoW!!!

Has anybody seen any responses to this from mopologists? I tried to find some mention of this study on FAIR, but I couldn't hold my nose long enough to get thru more than one WoW thread and this wasn't addressed.

For years the morg has been pointing to scientific studies about caffeine to "prove" the WoW was inspired. So I'm curious if they will continue to use *some* studies (and conveniently avoid this one), or if, instead, they will retreat into the "can't trust science - god knows more than science" mode.

Those studies will be dismissed as fundamentally flawed and biased.

I read that if you swallowed an entire shaker of salt it would kill you. Guess God should have warned us of salt. You can also kill yourself by drinking too much water. Granted it is several gallons I think but still, drinking water could kill you! :duh

Speaking of. . . Do you remember the hype about SARS?

I cannot find the website at this moment, but there was a study done, and more people died of drinking too much water than died of SARS in the same time period.

I think that it is safe to say that caffeine is not the best stuff to put into your body. Have you ever seen someone wake up and suddenly discover that there is no coffee in the cupboard? It is not a pretty sight. Caffeine is addictive and I believe that very few people can stop with just one cup of coffee a day. It is one of those drinks that some people cannot live without because the body craves it like it craves a wonderful orgasm. Sorry guys, coffee is harmful....I hope that you don't get the shakes from drinking it or not drinking it in the morning.

Wasn't caffeinated coffee declared unsafe for women who were expecting a baby? I thought I heard something to that effect but I could be wrong. And who sponsered the study? Maxwell House? Stick to ovaltine... ;)

Possibly addictive to *some* people... but like anything else, the answer is usually to use common sense and moderation.
I usually have a cup of coffee in the morning at work, but have no problem if we happen to run out. Rarely drink it on the weekends. It's not freakin' cocaine!
The supposed shakes and withdrawals reminds me of the movie "Reefer Madness". It's a scare tactic that has little basis in reality for most people.

According to the article, the study was done by the University of Scranton, and compared to previous data from the US Dept. of Agriculture.

MAYBE coffee is not so bad after all. We should keep an open mind. ;)

I drink it occasionally. I have not developed the "shakes" when I don't drink it. I do not need it every morning. I don't think it is as addictive as you are portraying it. It is not heroin. Besides, you can always drink decaf. Pres. McKay said decaf was ok.

To much caffeine can lead to higher risk for miscarriage. It is a stimulant so yes it is probably not good for a developing fetus. But so are many herbal remedies and numerous medications. So do you recommend people never taking medication that can cause problems for a pregnant woman?

Well...you know....I was trying to portray the body craving that wonderful orgasm and the horny feeling one gets when one sees a beautiful woman walking down the street and how one craves that wonderful orgasm of release even if it is a mental release as she passes by me with that aroma of sweet flowered perfume emanating from her senuous body...it is the same with coffee....a coffee drinker has the same feeling for that one cup of morning hot coffee as the coffee drinker's fingers enter the cup's handle and slowly puts the coffee to his lips allowing a release of sensation and feeling inside his coffee/loved craved body....I hope that I have now made it more clear for you.... although the orgasm and coffee have much in common it just sounds a little more perverted when it is the sensation of coffee touching lips and mouth....

No...but I am addicted to women as edifications of beauty :) I just thought that the general feeling would be the same for a male coffee drinker as he waits for the coffee to simmer and be poured into his cup. Now...I don't want to compare a woman to a cup of coffee.....but I do have a vivid imagination. :D

Why me....as always your posts inspire me to respond.

My comments come from experience..I am a coffee drinker. For 36 years I did not drink coffee. Now, I drink de-caf now and then and about once a week, I indulge in a caffeine cup of jo. In my pre-coffee years, I indulged regularly in (gasp) HOT Chocolate...but don't tell anyone.

May I say, that drinking a hot mug of coffee (with Vanilla no-fat creamer) IS enjoyable but not nearly as pleasurable as you make it sound, coming from someone who doesn't have a clue based on your experience. right? :D

Also, I run long distance races and caffeine use has been proven to help in sustaining and assisting in completing races in a positive way. So, as you always say...open minds lead to open skies..right? yeah.

The fear factor doesn't fly with me and there are alot more people who actually use moderation and control when ingesting substances but when it comes to being addicted to women and their beauty...I do see your point...hehehe. Keep up that vivid imagination and stick with us women in doing so...we like that sort of thing..okay, maybe just I do. :p

If coffee was as pleasurable as an orgasm Starbucks would charge way more than $4 a cup! :slap:

But imagine the thrill I get when I see a beautiful woman drinking cup of coffee!...but then I get a lot of thrills from beautiful women in many different situations. I suppose that it is one of the last enjoyments of manhood---observing beautiful women living life... Sorry you don't have an orgasm when drinking coffee... but I still think that I made a good comparison...:D Take care dancinfree... :)

One thing I have noted is an increase in acid reflux when I drink coffee. Apparently I am not alone. But it would seem that there are a number of other foods that can also have this effect:

http://heartburn.about.com/cs/causes/a/heartburncauses.htm
10 Most Frequent Causes of Heartburn
Your Guide, Sharon Gillson From Sharon Gillson,
Your Guide to Heartburn / Acid Reflux.

There are several causes of heartburn / acid reflux. There are several that are the most frequent causes of heartburn. Finding out what these are can help you make changes in your lifestyle and habit so you can prevent the acid reflux from happening.

Coffee, tea, and other drinks that contain caffeine
Caffeine can relax the LES, allowing stomach contents to reflux into the esophagus.

Chocolate
Chocolate contains concentrations of theobromine (a compound that occurs naturally in many plants such as cocoa, tea and coffee plants), which relaxes the esophageal sphincter muscle, letting stomach acid squirt up into the esophagus.

Fried and fatty foods
These foods tend to slow down digestion, keeping the food in your stomach longer This can result in increases pressure in the stomach, which in turn puts more pressure on a weakened LES, allowing reflux of stomach contents.

Tomatoes and tomato-based products
These foods relax the lower esophageal sphincter (LES).

Alcohol
Alcohol relaxes the lower esophageal sphincter, allowing the reflux of stomach contents into the esophagus. It also increases the production of stomach acid.

Tobacco
The chemicals in cigarette smoke weaken the LES as they pass from the lungs into the blood.

Large meals
A full stomach can put extra pressure on the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), which will increase the chance that some of this food will reflux into the esophagus.

Citrus fruits and juices
These foods relax the lower esophageal sphincter (LES).

Eating within 2 to 3 hours prior to bedtime
Lying down with a full stomach can cause stomach contents to press harder against the LES, increasing the chances of refluxed food.

Wearing tight fitting clothing
Clothing that fits tightly around the abdomen will squeeze the stomach, forcing food up against the LES, and cause food to reflux into the esophagus. Clothing that can cause problems include tight-fitting belts and slenderizing undergarments.
